Memorial day for escape victims: Kaufbeuren invites you to celebrate!
In Kaufbeuren, the day of remembrance for the victims of flight and expulsion will be celebrated on June 20, 2025. This has been practiced since 2014 and now falls on World Refugee Day this year. Mayor Stefan Bosse has invited all citizens to take part in the memorial service, which will take place on June 22, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at the Neugablonz Memorial in Fichtenweg. The event is accompanied musically by the Neugablonz Music Association and is organized in memory of the global victims of flight and expulsion.
The day of remembrance has developed into an important tradition since its introduction by a federal government decision on August 27, 2014. As part of the celebrations, the state flag, the Kaufbeuren flag and the Neugablonz flag will be hoisted at the memorial. The aim of this special day is not only to commemorate the victims, but also to highlight the themes of reconciliation, new beginnings and social cohesion.
Background of the memorial service
How on Wikipedia can be read, on this day the victims of flight and expulsion are particularly remembered, with the focus being on the German expellees. The day of remembrance has been celebrated annually in Germany since 2015 and was initiated to raise awareness of the fate of the displaced people. In many regions, the Hesse and Bavarian days of remembrance for the victims of flight, expulsion and deportation are also honored on the second Sunday in September.
Despite the good intentions, the introduction of this memorial day has also been criticized. Jan Korte, the deputy chairman of the left-wing faction in the Bundestag, expressed concerns that the memorial day could devalue the meaning of Holocaust Remembrance Day and relativize Germany's responsibility for National Socialism.
A sign of hope
The memorial event in Kaufbeuren is not only a pause, but also a sign of hope and understanding for the challenges that come with migration and displacement. In view of the many painful stories that lie behind the term escape, the celebration also honors the integration and development work of displaced persons, emigrants and late emigrants.
It is important to learn from history and apply the lessons to today. Especially in today's society, in which the topic of flight and migration is becoming more and more present, it is essential to have a good knack for solidarity and to share experiences. Mayor Bosse therefore invites everyone interested to take part in this important day and celebrate the commemoration together.
