Fecal germs in drinking water: boiling order in Kaufbeuren!

In Kaufbeuren as well as in the surrounding communities of Pforzen, Rieden/Zellerberg, part of Friesenried and the Germaringer district of Riederloh, a boiling order for tap water currently applies. This step became necessary on Sunday, October 5, 2025, due to microbiological contamination by fecal germs, such as the Allgäu newspaper reported. Around 55,000 people are affected in the region and are being asked to boil water before drinking and cooking to minimize health risks.

The contamination can lead to unpleasant gastrointestinal problems. While the health authorities in Ostallgäu are working hard to trace the problem, the first results from two series of samples after the boiling order was issued fortunately no longer show any fecal germs. However, feedback on the third series of samples is still pending, which means that citizens must continue to be careful.

Health department and measures

The health department is waiting for all the results before a decision can be made about a possible all-clear. In order for the boil order to be lifted, three negative tests on consecutive days are required. These samples are taken from around 30 locations throughout the city and an analysis takes around 48 hours. An official all-clear could possibly come next Sunday, October 5th, if all follow-up samples come back negative.

The exact location of the contamination has already been narrowed down, but there is still no conclusive information about how the contamination came about. Meanwhile, citizens have the opportunity to clarify questions via a hotline that has been set up. In addition, some citizens with health problems were referred to specialist centers in order to offer quick help.

Waterworks and boil water regulations

The municipal waterworks also supplies the surrounding communities and has therefore also issued a boil order. In Friesenried, it should be noted that only certain outdoor areas are affected by the boiling water regulation. In order to remove any germs from the water system, the pipes are regularly flushed using hydrants. The waterworks has also developed a coordinated action plan for dealing with contamination in order to bring the water supply back to a safe level as quickly as possible.

Similar problems with drinking water are not only present in Kaufbeuren. In other cities in Germany, such as Au or seaside resorts in the Main-Spessart, boiling orders were also issued due to enterococci or microbiological contamination. This shows that the problem of water quality is a widespread issue Platform water alarm clarified.

The situation remains tense and the local population is called upon to regularly inform themselves about the latest developments and follow the measures taken by the authorities. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will soon be able to give the all-clear and the drinking water quality will be restored.
