Gardens in the Haßberge district: Tips for climate-friendly gardening!

A blooming paradise for nature lovers: The Haßberge district once again presents itself as a special kind of garden paradise. The “Nature in the Garden” competition, which took place for the ninth time this year, not only recognized the beauty of the gardens, but also highlighted the outstanding ecological commitment of the participants. The jury particularly praised gardens that house climate-resistant shrubs and trees and thus make an important contribution to preserving biodiversity.

This year the award ceremony took place in Andrea and Peter Werner's beautiful garden in Westheim, where the perfect symbiosis between Franconian garden culture and environmental protection was celebrated. District Administrator Wilhelm Schneider took this opportunity to emphasize the increasing importance of gardens, especially given the changing climatic conditions. Because as NP-Coburg reports, not only the residents, but also the soil and plants are enormously challenged by the climate crisis.

Climate change in your own garden

The challenges posed by the climate crisis are omnipresent. Dry summers, mild winters as well as violent storms and heavy rain not only affect our everyday lives, but also our gardens. Plants suffer from dried out vegetables, brown lawns and flooding. A fact check shows that thirsty plants such as hydrangeas and rhododendrons in particular could suffer from the new conditions. One of the versatile design ideas is crater beds, which help to retain heat and moisture and thus protect sensitive plants. This is not only ecologically sensible, but also an ingenious way to give your own garden an extra shine. These adaptations to the new climatic conditions are of great importance for many garden lovers. Ultimately, it is important to continue to enjoy your own little paradise in the future.

Ecological commitment at local level

The event in the Haßberge district showed how creative garden design and ecological commitment can go hand in hand. The Franconian cottage gardens, ecologically managed settlement gardens and attractive residential gardens presented are the best examples of this. They are not only a pleasure for the eye, but also provide an important impetus for sustainable and environmentally conscious garden care.

The following applies to all hobby gardeners: If everyone pays a little more attention to the environment and adapts their gardens to the climatic challenges, then even small patches of soil can make a big difference. With the “Nature in the Garden” competition, the Haßberge district has shown how you can work for nature and the environment with a lot of creativity and a good hand and at the same time regain a bit of quality of life.

The next competition is eagerly awaited and we can already look forward to many new ideas and gardens that creatively meet the challenges of climate change.
