Bat adventure in the Murnauer Moos: excursion on July 11th!

What is happening in the Murnauer Moos? On Friday, July 11, 2025, nature lovers have the opportunity to gain exciting insights into the mysterious life of bats. The old canteen of the Hartsteinwerk, a witness to the quarrying, becomes the setting for a fascinating excursion that takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Here, participants can observe the "bearded bats" in their natural habitat, as they live in the walls during the day and take off on their twilight flight to search for prey. The excursion is led by Tim Korschefsky, head of the Murnauer Moos Biological Station, and bat expert Max Kieckbusch. At this event, participants not only learn about bearded bats, but also encounter other bat species along the way.

The event is aimed at all age groups, families are also expressly invited. To ensure that this exploration tour doesn't turn into a dark affair, it is recommended that you bring a flashlight with you. And who knows, maybe fireflies will light the way and you can even spot a dormouse in the canteen. To ensure that the excursion runs smoothly, the exact meeting point will be announced after registration Tim.Korschefsky@lra-gap.de announced. However, you should note that the event could be canceled in the event of rain or strong wind. This exciting night in nature is carried out in cooperation with the LBV regional group GAP-WM-SOG, which is also committed to protecting and observing wild animals.

Next bird watching in September

Another highlight for nature enthusiasts is on the program on Sunday, September 28, 2025. From 6:00 a.m. to around 10:00 a.m., visitors have the opportunity to observe the flying guests on the Europe-wide day of migratory bird watching, organized by the Murnauer Moos Biological Station and the Bavarian State Association for Bird Protection. You can expect exciting observation opportunities such as migrating starlings, goldcrests and rare species such as the merlin and the hen harrier.

Participants learn a lot about recognizing migrating birds and the calls of woodlarks, while also taking a critical look at the influence of climate change on migratory birds. After the observations, there is a debriefing in the biological station, which offers the perfect space for exchange and deepening. In order to take part, registration is required. Even if no special previous knowledge is necessary, you should ensure that you are in a good mood, have warm clothing and possibly rain protection. Binoculars and spotting scopes are also welcome to best observe the birds.

For anyone who wants to discover the Murnauer Moos and its animal inhabitants, these two events are an absolute must. It's nice to see how committed groups like the Murnauer Moos Biological Station and the LBV regional group GAP-WM-SOG are helping to preserve and present the natural beauty and diversity of our surroundings. During the excursion to see the bats and the bird watching, the participants can not only learn, but also make an important contribution to the preservation of our nature and perhaps even experience a piece of this diversity themselves.
