Freight ship stuck: rescue in Regensburg continues!

A worrying incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon in the Regensburg-Schwabelweis area. A freight ship from Rotterdam loaded with 1,780 tons of iron ore wanted to enter the West Harbor on June 11th at around 11:15 a.m. But during a turning maneuver, the 110 meter long ship came to rest on the right bank of the Danube. nn.de reports about the rescue operations that are currently ongoing. Fortunately, the three crew members were uninjured, but the ship is standing sideways in the Danube and is blocking shipping traffic.

At the moment only one-way passing on the left side of the river is possible. The motor freight ship had actually wanted to dock in the Westhafen of Regensburg, but the salvage work is now in the hands of the water police, who are also investigating the causes of the accident. Adding to the difficulties is the fact that neither the ship's own attempts to maneuver back into the channel nor the assistance of a push boat were successful.

Connections with other incidents

But this accident is not the only one that is currently affecting shipping in Bavaria. Another tragic event recently occurred in a lock in the Regensburg district, where an 85 meter long freight ship with 1,100 tons of iron ore on board sank. The two crew members were injured there too and had to escape using emergency ladders. This accident, which may have been caused by the ship breaking up, shows how quickly dangerous situations can arise in shipping. The press reports that the rescue work there could sometimes take several weeks, which could cause additional problems for the transport industry.

In the context of these incidents, it is worth remembering the historical dimension of shipping disasters. Air and water are not always as safe as they seem, and shipping disaster lists show that many accidents are caused by weather conditions or technical problems. Some events have even been brought about intentionally, such as during past wars. Wikipedia offers a comprehensive overview here, which not only documents the most serious maritime accidents, but also points out the most common causes.

The current rescue measures are a direct response to such accidents and underline how important safety is on the water. Shipping users must remain patient in the coming period until the situation in Regensburg is stabilized and traffic can flow smoothly again.
