Trees in danger: Fürth citizens should help with watering!

The hot summer season has caused worrying conditions in Fürth: water shortages and dry soil are severely affecting the trees in the city area. Since the hoped-for rain has failed to materialize for weeks, the Parks Department (GrfA) is calling on the public to help. Employees are already using several vehicles to water the city's trees, but resources are limited and the number of trees that need to be cared for is high. Detlef Post, the responsible arborist, appeals directly to citizens: "Water the trees near your homes! We need your support." This call is underpinned by the alarming conditions that not only endanger the lifespan of trees but also affect the urban climate.
Fürth town hallreports that citizens' help is urgently needed to preserve city trees and mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Free watering bags are available that can be filled with up to 80 liters of water and dispense the water in a metered manner over a longer period of time. These watering bags are available for collection at GrfA, Otto-Seeling-Promenade 37.

But why is this so important? City and street trees are true all-rounders. They regulate the microclimate, provide shade and filter emissions. At the same time, they provide habitat for many animals and plants. However, the trees in urban areas like Fürth are also exposed to extreme conditions: soil compaction, air and soil pollutants as well as road salt can dramatically shorten their lifespan. Many of these trees are only reaching half their potential lifespan, making the situation even more worrying. Climate change is exacerbating the problems that many tree species already have. The Federal Environment Agency points out that urban planning and the choice of tree species should be based on future climatic conditions in order to optimally support the trees.

Citizens' commitment to the city's trees

Cooperation between the city and the citizens is essential. Citizens should not just help once, but should also regularly look after their “green neighbors”. “Every drop counts!” says Detlef Post and encourages everyone to take part in watering. Especially in times when the summer heat is decreasing extremely but there is no rain, it is important to actively support city trees.

The city of Fürth will not tackle this initiative alone, as it is part of a larger movement that is gaining momentum across Germany. Cities are encouraged to adapt their tree concepts to the effects of climate change. Work is already underway in Fürth to address the effects of climate change in the long term. Market mirror reports that the Parks Department is actively calling on citizens to get involved.
Lists, like the widespread use of watering bags, represent a crucial step in such initiatives and show how everyone can work together to improve the quality of life in the city.
