Citizens' initiative fights for B2: Signatures for Amperbrücke urgently needed!
Things are boiling in Fürstenfeldbruck. The citizens' initiative “Remain the B2” has become active in the last few weeks and is loudly raising its voice against the planned relocation of the B2 federal highway from the city meadow. Your goal? A citizens' decision! How South Germans reports, the initiative wants to collect around 1,900 signatures by October 28th in order to bring their concern into an official decision. Currently, 1,200 to 1,300 citizens have already spoken out in favor of the initiative, as deputy spokesman Markus Droth emphasizes.
The city administration is less enthusiastic about this citizen participation and is perceived as not being very transparent. Mayor Christian Götz believes that a referendum is unnecessary because, according to him, relocating the federal highway would hardly change the traffic volume in the city center. The citizens' initiative agrees with many city councilors that the B2 move is just a way to combat symptoms. The only sustainable solution would be a third ampere crossing in order to really noticeably relieve the pressure on the city center.
The dispute over the Amper Bridge
A central topic of the discussion is the listed Amper Bridge. The city plans to renovate this only to the extent that heavy traffic is excluded - a maximum of 16 tons. This renovated bridge would then fall under the city's responsibility. Instead of a new building, supporters of the citizens' initiative advocate a careful renovation, while critics, such as Claus-Peter Bahner, point out that the rezoning essentially excludes the possibility of a third Ampere crossing.
Markus Droth and his fellow Free Voters are convinced that rezoning the B2 is much more than just shifting traffic flows. They warn against shifting traffic to other parts of the city, such as the west of Bruck. In the future, the B2 would also pass the event forum in the Fürstenfeld monastery - a not unrecognized burden on the city center. Concerned citizens have already expressed their first complaints about trucks on Rothschwaiger Strasse that are abusing the shortcut through the city.
Citizen participation as the key to the solution
However, the citizens' initiative needs broad support. If the signatures are not received, an “exchange” could take place with the Freising road construction authority, which would be important for the preparation of the traffic routes. The new regulation would mean that the city would take over the inner-city route of the B2 and downgrade it to downgraded roads with the aim of gaining more control. At this point, many doubt that the city alone can make the necessary investments, especially for the desired third Ampere crossing, which could only be realized with federal funds.
The question remains what will happen next: A referendum could take place in December or January, an exact date is still pending. The city council voted in May to convert the B2 into a municipal road, which is now being put to the test. The question for the upcoming referendum is as follows: “Are you in favor of the city of Fürstenfeldbruck exhausting all legal options to prevent the rezoning of the municipal streets Oskar-von-Miller-Straße and Outer Schöngeisinger Straße into a federal highway and thus not to use any municipal funds for the renovation of the Amper Bridge in the city center in the future?” As in Mercury held, the city council will review the legality of the citizens' petition in October or November. There is still a lot left to the initiative's supporters, who are determined to strengthen their position and send a clear signal for more citizen participation.
