Prof. IRO as an honorary member of the DGHNO-KHC: Honoring for life's work!

Erlangen, Deutschland - In May 2025, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Heinrich IRO appointed an honorary member at the 96th annual meeting of the German Society for Nose and Nose and Head and Narrow Surgery (DGHNO-KHC). This award has been awarded to personalities since 1951 who have made an exceptional description of ENT medicine and head and neck surgery. Conference President Prof. Dr. Timo Stöver paid tribute to Prof. IRO's significant merits for this department and emphasized his important role in the certification of head-neck tumor centers and the development of scientific guidelines of the DGHNO-KHC.

"He has a good knack for improving medical standards," continued Stöver. From 2006 to 2014, Prof. Iro was a member of the Presidium of the specialist society and also its president from 2013 to 2014. After an impressive career on April 1, 2025, he resigned as director of the ear, nose and throat clinic in order to work as the first full-time medical director of the University Hospital Erlangen. His appointment took place by Markus Blume, the Bavarian Minister of State for Science and Art.

The DGHNO KHC not only campaigns for the recognition of meritorious personalities, but also for the promotion of young people. The German Society for Nose and throats and the DFG jointly organize a junior academy. This academy focuses on research on the further development of the head and neck oncology and is of Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Orlando Guntinas-ELIUSIUS. The application for interested parties, whose doctorate was a maximum of six years ago, is still possible until July 7, 2023.

• Funding for DFG applications between 50,000 and € 80,000

This academy is designed to prepare participants: optimally to prepare for regular DFG applications inside. In addition to training in ENT medicine, certifications and supply research also play a major role in how current information on Cochlea implant certification and care proves.
