Bavarian Childhood Cancer Day: Hope and help for little fighters!
What's new in the world of pediatric oncology? From July 15th to 17th, 2025 it will be “All about cancer in children” again. KIONET, the Bavarian Children's Oncology Network, is organizing the 2nd Bavarian Childhood Cancer Day at various locations, including the Erlangen University Hospital. This event is not only intended to provide information, but also to promote exchange between those affected and specialists. Prof. Dr. Markus Metzler, spokesman for KIONET and the Children's Oncology Center in Erlangen, is optimistic and emphasizes the importance of these events for the affected children and their families. “Cancer diseases in children are serious strokes of fate,” it continues. At least four out of five affected children can be cured. But for one in five children, the treatment options are in question. KIONET is committed to developing innovative therapies and new healing methods in order to provide the best possible help to affected children in Bavaria. With the help of networking and intensive knowledge exchange across hospital boundaries, access to modern therapies should be improved.
A strong community for those affected
The collaboration in this network has existed for seven years and extends to various pediatric oncology centers in Bavaria, including Augsburg, Munich (LMU and TU), Regensburg and Würzburg. In addition to medical professionals, psychosocial support, sports and physiotherapy, nutritional medicine, research institutions, self-help groups and political decision-makers are also part of this comprehensive network. This has led to the number of therapy hours in Bavaria increasing and access to clinical studies further improving.
The upcoming Childhood Cancer Day also has an important social aspect: It is intended to draw attention to the special needs of children and young people with cancer and to honor the commitment of the professional groups working in this area. Not only patients and their families are addressed, but also survivors and everyone who is interested in this important topic. Representatives of the Bavarian Center for Cancer Research and political guests will also be on site and enrich the exchange.
