Pilot project for used cooking oil collection starts in the district!

Big things are happening in the Erlangen-Höchstadt district: An expanded pilot phase for the collection of used cooking oils is starting immediately. Those responsible would like to find an innovative solution to avoid disposal via drainpipes and garbage cans and at the same time increase the amount collected. This campaign will last for the next twelve months and is to be implemented in the communities of Aurachtal, Baiersdorf, Buckenhof, Herzogenaurach, Möhrendorf, Oberreichenbach, Spardorf, VG Uttenreuth and Weisendorf. The district is pleased to announce that the exact locations of the new collection points will be published by the respective municipalities.

The company Every Drop Counts GmbH will provide additional collection boxes at the existing recycling islands. These innovative collection boxes are already available in the pilot communities of Adelsdorf, Heroldsberg and Wachenroth and can also be found at the district's recycling centers. During the pilot phase, the collection of used cooking oil will also be offered free of charge.

What is allowed?

Citizens are invited to collect their used cooking oils in plastic bottles, such as PET, and dispose of them in the boxes provided. Used deep-frying and frying fats as well as oils from pickled foods, margarine and also spoiled, expired cooking oils and fats are permitted. However, to avoid contamination, mineral, motor and lubricating oils, chemicals, mayonnaise, sauces and dressings as well as leftover food should not end up in the collection boxes.

Environmental protection and resource conservation

The recycling of used cooking oils not only helps to reduce the burden on the wastewater system, but also helps to reduce fresh water consumption. The benefit from the collection should not be underestimated: used cooking oils can be converted into valuable energy sources that help our society become more independent of fossil fuels. This measure is in line with the aspirations of the Circular Economy Act (KrWG) and Germany's current environmental goals.

Waste management in Germany has undergone a long development process and is now characterized by clear legal regulations. A lot has happened since the beginning in the 19th century. The central requirements include the updated EU Waste Framework Act of 2018, which makes a significant contribution to promoting environmentally friendly waste management. The goal is clear: conserve natural resources and sustainably protect the environment, as the Federal Environment Agency reports.

The municipal waste management offices are happy to provide further information on waste separation and current measures. You can contact the staff on 09193 20 1761 or -1762. The district is not only focusing on a practical solution to an everyday problem, but is also making an important contribution to the environment. Stay tuned – something is really happening here!
