Drone alarm over Erding: Bundeswehr and police in large-scale operation!

The recent incidents with drones over Munich Airport are currently causing a stir and are spreading ever wider. Drones were also spotted at the Bundeswehr site in Erding, where unmanned systems are being developed. Like that BR reported, a spokeswoman for the Operational Command confirmed that it had previously been incorrectly stated that there was no information about drone overflights. However, details about the sighted drones were not disclosed for operational reasons.

Curious and concerned citizens are asking themselves: Is there a connection to the incidents at Munich Airport? Several unmanned flying objects were spotted there, which paralyzed flight operations for several hours. The first sightings occurred at 8:30 p.m. and up to 17 flights were ultimately canceled, affecting almost 3,000 passengers. In addition, 15 incoming aircraft were diverted. Drones were also spotted over a Belgian military base in Elsenborn, increasing concerns about security threats in Europe.

A growing problem

The sightings are part of a worrying trend. According to a report by the daily news Drone flights over Bundeswehr locations and critical infrastructure in Germany are increasing. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt spoke of a growing threat from drones and announced the development of a new aviation security law. This is intended to enable the Bundeswehr to support the police in drone defense measures. The planned changes to the law are intended to allow the shooting down of drones under certain conditions, which leads to discussion about the necessary way to deal with this threat.

It is clear to security authorities that drones not only pose a danger, but can also be used for espionage or sabotage. The proposal to allow the use of armed force against unmanned aircraft is causing divided opinions in the Bundestag. However, approval of these legal changes is anything but certain, as the coalition partners SPD and Greens do not have a clear mandate in parliament, which could lead to a quiet political squabble.

International dimensions

Especially against the backdrop of the geopolitical situation and the war in Ukraine, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasizes the dangers of drones and their possible use by enemy states. Europe is already considering increased cooperation on drone defense. Dobrindt advocates a joint “Drone Detection and Defense Plan” at the next meeting of European interior ministers. It remains to be seen whether and how these plans can be put into action.

In the meantime, critical voices such as Green Party leader Felix Banaszak are calling for the government to finally take clear measures to protect critical infrastructure. The discussion has opened - and it will be exciting to see how those responsible in Germany will react to the increasing sightings of drones.
