Würzburg wins despite being outnumbered: pure excitement in the promoted duel!
An exciting football game took place in Würzburg today. The Würzburger Kickers celebrated an important win against newly promoted Eichstätt and thus shortened the gap to the top of the table to just two points. Before kick-off, the gap to leaders Unterhaching was a full five points, which spurred Würzburg even more on to collect the urgently needed points. But the fact that the path to victory was anything but easy became clear when looking at the circumstances surrounding the game.
Coach Marc Reitmaier was unable to stand on the sidelines due to a suspension, which put additional pressure on the home team. The guests from Eichstätt, who traveled to Würzburg with two wins behind them, were by no means to be underestimated. The first dangerous actions of the game went to Würzburg when Kraus fired the first shot in the 12th minute. But Eichstätt also didn't let up and had good chances, like in the 27th minute when a shot from Nischalke was blocked. Both Würzburg and Eichstätter fought doggedly for the ball.
Drama in the second half
In the first half it was Uhl who took the lead for Würzburg after a goal in the 38th minute. After the break, Eichstätt immediately tried to increase the pressure. In the 48th minute, Beusch had a great opportunity, but only hit the side netting. Würzburg continued to be dangerous, especially through Zejnullahu, who hit the crossbar in the 66th minute but was unable to take advantage of the follow-up shot.
In a dramatic twist to the game's theatricality, both teams saw a traffic light card at the same time. Zejnullahu was sent off in the 69th minute, and just a few minutes later Kraus followed for repeated foul play (72nd minute). Despite being twice outnumbered, the Würzburg team showed impressive defense and secured the deserved victory. Würzburg's next opponent is TSV Aubstadt, who will face the Kickers team on Friday.
