Two years ago, Deutsche Bahn opened a new station prototype in Zorneding, which is considered a showcase project for sustainable mobility. With a photovoltaic system on the roof and environmentally friendly wooden exterior construction, the “little green station” is an interesting initiative as part of DB's green transformation. But while the station building is standing and the equipment for sustainable operation is in place, the station forecourt remains an unfinished construction site. The approval for completion is still missing.

Doris Rauscher, Ebersberg state parliament member and SPD district chairwoman, has already contacted Deutsche Bahn several times. “We need planning security for the community,” she says, emphasizing the urgency. The agreement between the community of Zorneding and Deutsche Bahn stipulated that the DB would build the station while the community would pay for the design of the forecourt. At the last meeting of the Zornedingen municipal council, no progress was communicated on the matter. Rauscher criticizes the inadequate feedback from Deutsche Bahn and has written another letter to increase the pressure on the company. “The lack of clarity about the completion date is frustrating,” continued the politician, who is committed to the concerns of the community.

In the context of this local problem, the outstanding importance of sustainable mobility and the railway for climate protection must also be addressed. Deutsche Bahn has set itself the ambitious goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040. This includes a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain. Rail operations are also considered one of the most climate-friendly forms of mass mobility, with the company actively supporting customers and the state in achieving their climate goals.

A role model for future projects

Zorneding station is not just a construction site, but also a symbol of Deutsche Bahn's commitment to environmental protection. It shouldn’t be the last “little green station”; A second project in Haar is already being planned and is scheduled to open in early summer 2024. This development shows that there is a clear trend towards more environmentally friendly construction methods and stations, which will play a key role in future mobility.

However, without the necessary support and clear communication from Deutsche Bahn, the potential of this project in Zorneding could not be fully exploited. The population and local politicians are urgently waiting for the next news from Frankfurt. The stress surrounding the completion of the forecourt should therefore be resolved quickly so as not to endanger the sustainability goals.
