Deggendorf: THD cooperates with Harvard for health science excellence!

Whether new partnerships in the health sciences really make sense? The Deggendorf University of Technology (THD) is setting a good example. It strengthens its profile in the health sector and benefits from international exchange programs. This week, Professor Chris Lim from Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston visited DIT to support and strategically develop the Physician Assistant program. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Thiha Aung, this exchange promises exciting impulses and a breath of fresh air for the students.

Professor Lim not only brings a wealth of experience from the USA, but also valuable insights into the training system there. Through this cooperation, the DIT hopes to pool knowledge between Boston and Deggendorf and further consolidate the international orientation of the program. A memorandum of understanding was signed between the DIT and the MGH Institute of Health Professions in April 2025, which serves as the foundation for deeper academic collaboration. This measure is intended to help students acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to be optimally prepared for the profession of Physician Assistant, where medical knowledge and practical experience are essential, as Merriam-Webster defines.

The Road to Boston

The DIT goes one step further: two PA training students traveled to Boston on November 14th to gain an insight into everyday professional life. Over a period of four weeks, you can expect an intensive learning experience that will certainly not only broaden your horizons, but also strengthen the connection between the two institutions.

As part of this exchange program, Laura Lemberger, a PhD student at DIT, will also be conducting research at Harvard Medical School in November. The focus here is on deepening scientific collaboration and initiating joint projects. In this context, President Berg emphasizes the importance of new partnerships for international programs in the health sciences. Such close exchange is already showing initial positive results.

Health sciences at a glance

What exactly makes health sciences so exciting? At the DIT, fundamental topics in health sciences such as shaping and influencing health on a social, political and individual level are addressed. A particular focus is on the analysis of the social state integration of the healthcare system in Germany as well as the structures and actors of healthcare provision. The public health service (ÖGD) plays a central role in this.

Students learn to identify and combat health disparities while developing important prevention strategies. The aim is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the challenges in the healthcare system and to acquire knowledge of the relevant public health actors. Such skills are crucial in order to be able to actively shape future developments in the health sector, as shown on the [FHM International](https://www.fhm-international.de/en/study/?tx_mmfhm_study%5Baction%5D=show&tx_mmfhm_study%5Bcontr oller%5D=Study&tx_mmfhm_study%5Bstudy%5D=46&tx_mmfhm_studytypeid%5B0%5D=8&cHash=e074738bfc5727f585b3f044104392fe) explained.

The DIT's development in the field of health sciences shows that it not only keeps up with the times, but is also prepared to offer its students the best opportunities through international collaboration. The next steps will definitely be watched closely because there is a lot of potential in the air!
