Storm alarm in Bavaria: Thunderstorms and hail surprise bathers!

The weather in Bavaria has caused a lot of excitement in the last few days. On Sunday, June 15th, severe thunderstorms swept across the country, suddenly putting many bathers at the lake on alert. The German Weather Service (DWD) warned in advance of storms, especially in the evening of the same day. These warnings were tough: up to 30 liters of precipitation per square meter were forecast in a very short time, accompanied by gusts of up to 90 km/h and hail with grain sizes of up to 2 cm, as Merkur reports.

In Munich in particular, the northern urban area as well as the districts of Munich, Fürstenfeldbruck, Dachau and Freising were examined. The darkness and the strong wind already gave an idea that something was approaching. In the Hof district, severe amounts of rain had already caused the flooding of a Rewe supermarket, while in the Kelheim district, streets were flooded and cars could no longer drive. The police in Upper Franconia also had to manage around 20 operations, which at least resulted in no injuries, as BR notes.

Thunderstorm alarm in the Free State

The thunderstorm cells, which moved across the country mainly from the west, attracted attention especially in the region around Augsburg and into the Allgäu. For many, the question naturally arises: What happens next? However, on Monday morning, June 16th, the storms had passed to such an extent that there were no longer any warnings.

The DWD issued advance information about possible severe thunderstorms, which was valid until 4 a.m. Monday morning. The weather situation is exciting: remnants of a cold front are still present in the Alps, while a high pressure area is providing some relief over the English Channel. Not only in Bavaria, but also in Saxony and Thuringia, significant rainfall of over 40 liters per square meter was recorded, which continues to keep the situation tense, as the Unwetterzentrale shows.

Damage and challenges

The floods and storm damage are not without consequences. Uprooted trees and minor road erosion make it clear how violently nature can strike. In Perletzhofen, Kelheim district, streets were flooded, and in Helmbrechts several fire departments had to work continuously to contain the masses of water. The DWD warned in particular of strong thunderstorms in Franconia, especially around Bayreuth, and announced that many districts in Upper and Lower Bavaria were affected.

The demands on emergency services increase with every storm. The weather situation remains tense, and the outskirts of Baden-Württemberg are not spared. A look at the warning levels shows us that the situation is serious: we still have to expect moderate to extreme storms. It remains to be seen how the next few hours will develop.
