Stasi exhibition in Coburg: Shocking insights into the past!
What can visitors to Coburg expect in the coming weeks? The traveling exhibition “Wanting everything to know. The Stasi and its documents” opens its doors at the COSMOS youth culture center, Schützenstraße 1A. The Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive invites you to immerse yourself in the dark history of the GDR secret police from January 21st to February 25th, 2026. Details are provided by the Federal Archives, which organizes the exhibition and draws attention to the explosive history and methods of the Stasi.
The exhibition impressively shows how the former State Security Service (Stasi) acted on behalf of the Socialist Unity Party (SED) from 1949 to 1990. Your goal? Intimidation, manipulation and surveillance of dissidents. Visitors can discover facsimiles of 21 objects in seven display cases, including a handmade letter “A” made of aluminum foil and crepe paper, which documents a couple's desire to leave the country in 1985. Another exhibit provides insight into a Stasi surveillance photo from 1986, which shows someone involved in the attack on the “La Belle” discotheque. Federal Archives reports that the exhibition is accessible both on site and online. QR codes on the showcases lead to the website www.alles-wissen-wollen.de, which contains around 400 documents, photos, audios and films.
Accompanying program and citizen interaction
The information content of the exhibition is enriched by a discussion entitled “Remembering for the Future”. On January 21st, moderated by Iris Kroon-Lottes, a variety of speakers, including Daniela Münkel and Evelyn Zupke, will speak about the themes of the exhibition. Anyone interested can also view the Stasi documents at a public consultation on the same day from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The exhibition is organized in cooperation with the Coburg Adult Education Center, the city's cultural department and Europe Direct Coburg, which underlines the local network. This initiative not only offers visitors insights into the structures and methods of the Stasi, but also into the ideology necessary for it. In addition to the objects mentioned above, observation photos, planning maps and personal belongings of those affected are also presented.
Free entry for everyone
The exhibition opening hours are Tuesday to Friday, 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and entry is free. The aim is to give as many interested parties as possible the opportunity to deal with the issue, which continues to have a deep influence on society.
Take your time and visit this fascinating exhibition. The crimes and sophisticated methods of the Stasi, which determined everyday life in the GDR, are impressively presented and offer an excellent opportunity to experience a piece of history up close. VHS Coburg highlights that the exhibition also offers digital insights and information, which makes dealing with this dark past more exciting.
Coming to terms with the Stasi's history, which still brings back painful memories, has its place in social discussion. This traveling exhibition not only aims to provide information, but also to encourage people to think about the mechanisms of dictatorships. bpb.de reports that the Stasi files represent a unique historical treasure that is being prepared for society.
