Casting call in Coburg: Become part of the film Death Desire”!

There will soon be big things to see in Coburg! From January 13th to 23rd, 2026, the State Theater will be the backdrop for the film “Maria Ohm's Longing for Death”. As Fränkischer Tag reports, the filming will interrupt theater performances for around ten days and a 30-person team from Berlin-based Soilfilms Media GmbH will transform the theater into a temporary film studio. For the ambitious production, not only are the sets in the theater being rebuilt, but numerous extras are also being sought.

A total of five extras are needed for the crucial filming days on January 13th, 14th, 15th, 21st and 23rd. The roles include a theater ensemble consisting of four actors and an assistant director. We are looking for applicants between the ages of 20 and 60 who can wear comfortable clothing for sports or theater rehearsals. The assistant director, on the other hand, should appear in normal everyday clothing. There is also a requirement for the color palette: black, gray, burgundy, turquoise with a dash of sand color are in demand. On January 15th, an additional 50 to 100 extras will be required as an “audience” who should appear elegantly in evening wear. Nordbayerische Zeitung informs that the time spent by the extras is around six hours on January 15th and around eight hours on the other days.

How do you apply?

Anyone interested can apply by email to seeds@soilfilms.com by January 6th. Submissions should include name, age, a recent photo and information about existing evening wear. It is important that the selection of extras is based solely on the emails - no casting is planned. There is an allowance of 50 euros for each day of filming, but there is no reimbursement for costumes or travel costs.

The plot of “The Death Longing of Maria Ohm” revolves around the eponymous theater actress Maria Ohm, who struggles with all sorts of challenges in Berlin - be it following the strict stage directions or dealing with her deep-seated childhood trauma. As the story progresses, she meets Hendrik Klee, a philosopher who supports her in her search for the meaning of life. It is directed by Silvana Santamaria and the cast includes many well-known faces, including Julia Jentsch, who will shine in the role of director.

Film funding and local film industry

In the context of local film production, it is interesting that the German film production industry, as Statista shows, comprised a total of 774 active film production companies in 2022. Although this number has fallen in recent years, the film funding reform, which is due to come into force in 2025, has the potential to provide positive impulses. This development could also have an impact on projects such as the film in Coburg, which certainly hope to support regional film productions.

In summary, Coburg is not only a stage for the theater, but soon also for the film world! Anyone interested in being part of this unique experience should apply for a role quickly.
