Arson attack shakes Schorndorf Christmas market – help needed!
Once again there is sad news from Schorndorf, where unknown perpetrators carried out a cowardly attack on the popular Christmas market on Sunday night. The incident occurred at the church square, where a total of eight stalls went up in flames. Mayor Max Schmaderer (Free Voters) is deeply affected and describes the fire as an “attack on voluntary work and clubs”.
The arsonists apparently deliberately sprayed the wooden huts with petroleum and set them on fire. Thanks to the quick intervention of the fire brigade, which was alerted by an attentive driver, most of the stands were largely preserved. The fire department initially had to contend with its own damage to its sales hut, but quick action prevented anything worse from happening. During the extinguishing work, the smell of fire accelerant was clearly noticeable in the air.
Surveillance camera helps the police
A surveillance camera recorded the perpetrators and the police are now evaluating the video footage. An appeal has been launched for witnesses who can provide information to help advance the investigation.
However, the positive side of these frightening events must also be looked at: The Christmas market in Schorndorf celebrated its 40th anniversary on November 30th and, despite the arson attack, is taking place as planned until 10 p.m. Schmaderer calls on the population to visit the market and support the numerous associations that suffered damage as a result of the events. “A good visit to the market would help the affected clubs compensate for the fire damage,” said the mayor.
The Schorndorf Christmas market is a central contact point during Advent and traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of Advent. Current events cast a shadow over the festive mood, but the community stands together and shows that it is not hiding its head in the sand.
It remains to be hoped that the perpetrators will be caught soon and such incidents can be prevented in the future. The support of the population is now more important than ever to strengthen volunteer work and the clubs in Schorndorf.
