Tragedy in Garmisch: 46-year-old dies in apartment full of smoke

On Tuesday morning, September 2, 2025, a 46-year-old was found lifeless in his apartment in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, surrounded by thick smoke. A concerned acquaintance alerted police after he thought his friend might be in trouble. The fire department opened the apartment door around 10 a.m. and discovered the man dead amidst dangerous smoke.

The Weilheim criminal police have started the investigation, under the direction of the Munich II public prosecutor's office. Initial findings indicate that there is no external influence. A home oxygen cylinder was found in the apartment, which the man may have used while smoking a cigarette. A fire had been identified in the apartment, but it was no longer burning when the emergency services arrived. While the living quarters suffered from heavy smoke, the apartment above remained habitable. Evidence of intentional arson has so far been ruled out.
