Bayreuth presents new energy report: City councils demand more clarity!

The city of Bayreuth's new energy report is on everyone's lips. The extensive report was published on December 3, 2025, which runs to an impressive 338 pages. This is made known to the urban development committee and documents the energy consumption of 41 municipal buildings. With a total area of over 224,000 square meters - that's around 31 football fields - the report provides valuable insights into the city's energy needs.

As Kurier reports, the city councilors do not agree with the new report: They are demanding more comprehensive information, especially on savings in euros and cents. “There is something there,” is the tenor of the city councilors, who are demanding a detailed breakdown of the savings. The energy report, which has been updated annually since 2002, will soon be available to citizens online so that everyone can view the information.

Climate protection and energy savings

The numbers in the current report are impressive. From 2001 to today, the city of Bayreuth has saved 410 million liters of water and 103 million kilograms of CO2. These savings correspond to the annual emissions of one million refrigerators or 64,132 cars, as bayreuth.de notes. The report, prepared by the Office for Environmental and Climate Protection, includes, among other things, 25 schools, two town halls, various daycare centers as well as the indoor swimming pool and the ice rink. New facilities such as the RW21, the city library and the Lindenhof environmental protection information center have been added.

These sustainable efforts are also thanks to the targeted energy data management that the city has been pursuing for years. Not only is thermal protection optimized, but electricity consumption in public buildings is also sustainably reduced. “With a good knack for efficiency,” the city has a win-win situation that is both easy on the municipal purse strings and benefits the environment.

The role of municipalities in climate protection

Municipalities and districts are crucial for achieving national climate protection goals and serve as role models for citizens and local companies. The Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics supports cities in developing municipal energy and climate protection concepts. This includes everything from the creation of energy and greenhouse gas balances to potential analyzes for energy savings.

The institute's expertise includes the development of climate protection strategies and controlling concepts to ensure that measures have a sustainable effect and not only achieve short-term effects. Strategic planning is necessary so that Bayreuth continues to demonstrate a good hand when it comes to energy efficiency in the future.

The 2023 Energy Report is therefore not just a snapshot, but a call for further optimization and a more conscious use of resources. We can only hope that the city councils will draw the necessary conclusions and that citizens will actively participate in climate protection.
