Remembrance Day: Bamberg remembers on November 16th!
On Sunday, November 16, 2025, a memorial service for Remembrance Day will take place in Bamberg. The event commemorates the victims of both world wars, the expulsion from their homes and the National Socialist tyranny. The fallen soldiers will be remembered in a moving ceremony at 2 p.m. at the memorial in the cemetery on Hallstadter Strasse. Remembrance Day, originally established in 1919 and celebrated annually since 1952, represents an important opportunity to remember all those who have lost their lives in armed conflict and violent repression. According to information, this day was established in the modern sense to also commemorate the civilians who suffered during the war. Wiesentbote reports on the event, to which all citizens are cordially invited, especially the relatives of the fallen and missing.
A musical setting will accompany the ceremony. The Bamberg City Band and the Bamberg Oratorio Choir ensure the right atmosphere. Dean Roland Huth from the Bamberg Deanery will also give a speech. The importance of Remembrance Day is that it keeps alive the memory of the painful chapters of our history and encourages us as a society to reflect. This tradition has its origins in 1893, when the Day of Repentance and Prayer was introduced as a national holiday in the Kingdom of Prussia. It has been shown again and again that Remembrance Day is an important part of our cultural remembrance culture, which shows us that peace is not a given. Wikipedia illustrates that the day was celebrated again in West Germany from 1948 onwards, after it was taken in a different direction during the Nazi era. Now many regions of Germany have their own ceremonies, often organized by veterans' associations.
Invitation to the memorial hour
Mayor Andreas Starke will lay the wreath, supported by the Federal Police. The city of Bamberg invites all interested citizens to pause together and remember the people who died during the wars. Remembrance Day is a moment of silence and respect that reminds us that the freedom we enjoy was purchased with many sacrifices. In today's world it is even more important to show solidarity and pay our respect to the victims.
Nevertheless, Remembrance Day is not just a look back at the past. It also offers the chance to take a look at the current conflicts and suffering of many people around the world. This makes Remembrance Day a call for peace and understanding, which is particularly important today.
We look forward to many participants who would like to remember that we stand together for peace. Events like these are more than just tradition – they are an expression of our attitude and our values in society.
