Bamberg takes over the leadership of the AG Historic Cities until 2027!
The city of Bamberg recently took over the overall management of the Working Group for Historic Cities (AGHS) and will act in this role until June 2027. The official handover took place in July 2025 in Lübeck, where Mayor Benedikt M. Hummel from Görlitz handed over the management to a delegation from Bamberg. The members of the Bamberg delegation included Achim Welzel, Silke Klotzek and Tina Friedemann from the city planning office, who will now jointly address the challenges of urban development funding.
The AG Historic Cities, which has existed since 1973, is committed to the protection and further development of historical heritage. The focus is on professional exchange with cities such as Lübeck, Regensburg, Meißen, Stralsund and Görlitz. Important topics such as simplifying procedures, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and advancing digitalization are discussed in the consultations. In this sense, cooperation with the German Association of Cities and the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction will also be discussed.
Future prospects for Bamberg's old town
In Bamberg, which is known for its fascinating beer culture and traditional breweries, the old town plays a special role. The picturesque old town offers a compact structure with attractions close to hotels and holiday apartments. A highlight is the impressive cathedral, which is only a few minutes away. This historic atmosphere attracts visitors from near and far.
For anyone who wants to find out more about the city, there is the practical Bamberg app. It can be downloaded from the Play Store or iTunes Store for €4.49 and offers comprehensive information about the main attractions - even in English. The app takes users into the stories and sounds of Bamberg's history and is a great way to find your way around on the go.
Next AGHS meeting
Bamberg invites you to the next meeting of the AG Historic Cities on December 4th and 5th, 2025. This will be an excellent opportunity to expand on the topics discussed and develop new perspectives for members. The city is showing a good hand when it comes to preserving its tradition and historical heritage while at the same time thinking in a modern way.
Overall, it is an exciting moment for Bamberg, which is not only concerned with its own urban development, but also plays an active role in a much larger context. Wiesentbote reports on these developments, and we can look forward to seeing what new impulses the city can provide over the next two years.
