Bamberg in transition: 3.7 million euros for green power lines!

A new chapter in Bamberg's energy supply: Bayernwerk Netz GmbH has officially given the starting signal for the upgrading of a 3.5 kilometer long overhead line between the Bamberg North and Bamberg South substations. The construction work, which will begin next week, is a response to the increasing demand for renewable energy in the region. In total, the company is investing around 3.7 million euros in this project, which is scheduled to be completed by summer 2026. This reports mynewsdesk.de.

Preparations are already in full swing. On September 11th, an information event was held in the customer center where owners and tenants were given an insight into the upcoming work. The plans, which were approved by the government of Upper Franconia in November 2024, include, among other things, the reinforcement of 14 electricity pylons and the renovation of foundations. Particularly noteworthy is the replacement of a mast at the Bamberg substation, which is of great importance for future performance.

Environmental protection in focus

But that's not all: Bayernwerk is setting new standards in environmental protection in a partnership with the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection. On May 25th, a declaration of intent to promote biodiversity and biotope connectivity was signed. “We take our social responsibility to protect natural habitats seriously,” said Dr. Egon Westphal, CEO of Bayernwerk. This is also shown by an example from the past: a high-voltage line in the south of Bamberg has been maintained for 20 years in such a way that the biodiversity there has increased significantly - from 279 plant species in 2002 to 355 plant species today.

Ecological route management is intended not only to increase biodiversity, but also to improve access to high-voltage lines and at the same time increase occupational safety. Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber emphasizes the importance of the biotope network for the preservation of nature and the fight against the loss of species. “We have set ourselves ambitious goals: we want to secure at least 10% of the state’s area as a biotope network by 2023 and at least 13% by 2027,” explains Glauber.

Carrying out the construction work

The construction work along the planned line will be carried out under strict environmental and safety requirements. Traffic disruptions should be kept to a minimum and coordinated in coordination with the local authorities. “The visual appearance of the line will remain largely unchanged,” assures Bayernwerk, thus taking the residents and the surrounding area into consideration.

In the coming months, the construction company Cteam Consulting & Anlagenbau GmbH will set up the construction site and take the first steps to upgrade the power grid. Employees will strive to carry out the work as smoothly as possible, without losing sight of the environment and citizens.

Overall, this project represents an important step towards making Bamberg's energy future sustainable and further promoting the integration of green electricity.
