Bamberg asks: How safe do you feel in our city?

Bamberg, a city that impresses with its impressive historical backdrop with the famous Sandstrasse and the majestic Altenburg, is currently being swept up in an exciting initiative. The Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg is looking for participants for a study that examines citizens' sense of security. How safe do Bamberg residents feel in their own city? This question is at the center of the study, which is being carried out by the Chair of Personality Psychology and Psychological Diagnostics under the direction of Ronja Rösler. The study is part of the interdisciplinary research network Smart City Research Lab (SCRL), which deals intensively with digital and social change in Bamberg.

The study aims to deepen understanding of the factors that influence feelings of safety in public spaces. It is of great importance to determine which places are perceived as unsafe and which personal and social influences play a role. The aim is to collect valuable data that will provide inspiration for concrete measures to improve the feeling of security. This information is of interest not only for science, but also for future urban development.

How does participation work?

Taking part in the survey is extremely easy and takes a maximum of 15 minutes. Interested citizens can easily participate online and provide demographic data. They also mark three places on a virtual city map where they feel unsafe. They then answer specific questions about their sense of security at the chosen locations. A special advantage: The survey is optimized for smartphones, tablets and computers, although a larger screen is recommended.

Participants have the chance to win one of 50 Bamberg City vouchers worth 10 euros each. In addition, psychology students can have their participation counted as test subject hours, which makes the initiative particularly attractive for students.

A call for participation

This study offers all Bamberg residents the opportunity to contribute their personal experiences and contribute directly to improving their city. “We encourage citizens to share their perceptions,” says Ronja Rösler. “We would like to use this feedback to help ensure that security concepts and urban development are better tailored to people’s needs.”

Anyone interested in taking part in the study can find further information and the access link to the survey at this link. Together we can experience how the feeling of security in Bamberg can change and what steps are necessary to achieve this. How safe is Bamberg really? Let's explore this question together!
