Sensational victory for Kubica: Triumph at the 24 Hours of Le Mans!
Last weekend, an important chapter in motorsport history opened: Robert Kubica, the 40-year-old Polish racing driver, won the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This was the first time Kubica had triumphed in the Ferrari and it represents the greatest achievement of his career to date. Along with teammates Ye Yifei of China and Philip Hanson of Great Britain, he drove the #83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P and took victory, more than a decade after his near-fatal accident in 2011. Mainpost reports that Kubica was already earmarked for a place at Ferrari due to his impressive performances in the past, when he achieved fantastic results at BMW Sauber.
All participants had to struggle in qualifying, but the Ferrari team showed superior pace in the race. Kubica's goal came at a perfect time as he and his teammates celebrated the victory in front of over 300,000 enthusiastic spectators. The competition did not manage to keep up: The team around Matt Campbell, Kevin Estré and Laurens Vanthoor took second place in the Porsche, while another factory Ferrari with Antonio Giovinazzi secured third place. Mick Schumacher and his team in the Alpine didn't have a chance and ended up in eleventh place, while Pascal Wehrlein and his team in another Porsche reached ninth place.
A comeback that inspires
Kubica, who was born in Krakow in 1984 and began his career in karting at the age of six, was long considered one of the most promising drivers in the Formula 1 circus. Despite his serious accident while rallying, in which he broke 42 bones and suffered significant injuries, he did not give up. Months of recovery and rehabilitation were necessary in order to attempt a comeback in Formula 1. After returning in 2019, he drove for Williams and gained important experience, even if he only scored one point in the entire season. Mirror highlights that this latest success at Le Mans is not only a personal satisfaction, but also elevates him to the select group of drivers who have won both Le Mans and a Formula 1 race.
Ferrari's total number of victories at Le Mans now stands at 12, an impressive result for the team who once again left the competition behind. While Kubica and his teammates climbed onto the podium, Schumacher performed below expectations. Motorsport-Magazin reminds that Kubica also won the championship in the World Endurance Championship in 2023, which impressively underlines his skills behind the wheel.
Kubica's victory in Le Mans is seen as a milestone in his career. His incomparable fighting spirit and his passion for motorsport are examples of how to come back from even the toughest setbacks and make the impossible possible.
