70 years of children's leisure time: Stadtallendorf celebrates tradition in Bad Kissingen!

In Stadtallendorf, children's leisure activities in Bad Kissingen have a long tradition that has now existed for 70 years. Originally launched by the Sudeten German Country Team under the leadership of Erich Zein, this initiative aims to offer children physical and mental recovery after the grueling years of war. Today, boys and girls spend their valuable time in the Heiligenhof and experience unforgettable adventures in nature.

“It’s also about developing a ‘feeling of togetherness,’” emphasizes Sebastian Richter, the deputy youth worker, who has been accompanying this tradition for years. The city took over the sponsorship in 1958 and since 1978 the youth care department has been primarily responsible for the program. To date, thousands of children have taken part in this activity and have been awarded numerous gold medals, which are lovingly kept by former participants. The 70th anniversary of the leisure event is also personally appreciated by Sebastian Richter, as his mother was also once a participant.

A look back at 70 years

As part of the celebrations, the young people created an impressive exhibition showing photos from seven decades. The nostalgic games that have been revisited include classics such as hitting the pot and marbles. Former caregivers sent videos that brought back vivid memories of previous activities. Matthias Schneider fondly remembered building rafts, which ultimately led to the purchase of canoes. Lydia Beier, who reported on the construction of a kiln for ceramics and bread, also brought in these great memories. Simeon Mengel also organized an exciting orienteering run in the forest.

Interestingly, there is a ban on cell phones during free time, so the children are forced to communicate in the traditional way - namely by letter. This year, 70 children took part in the activity, and demand is growing: almost 70 registrations have already been received for the 2026 activity!

A revival trip for adventure seekers

For all those who can't get enough of the experiences, a “revival trip” is on the program during the autumn holidays. A triathlon is planned that combines hiking, cycling and canoeing. This opens another chapter in the history of this great tradition.

This makes it clear that children's leisure activities are not only a place for relaxation, but also a valuable platform for promoting community and friendship that connects across generations. This is a unique example of how local initiatives can have a positive impact on young people's lives. With that in mind, good times in Bad Kissingen!
