Black smoke over Augsburg: steam locomotive causes confusion!
What's going on above the main train station in Augsburg? On Whit Monday, shortly before 9:30 a.m., thick black smoke rising towards the main train station attracted the attention of passers-by at the Gögginger Bridge. Curious people stopped and wondered if there was a fire. The city of Augsburg and Deutsche Bahn (DB) were contacted immediately, but the inquiries initially received no response. A spokesman for the DB said: “Nothing is currently known from the DB,” which only further fueled speculation among passers-by.
It didn't take long for the matter to be clarified. The cause of the smoke was ultimately a steam locomotive from the Ammersee Steam Railway, which was running on Whit Monday and is naturally not exactly smoke-free. The nostalgic steam train ride from Augsburg to Utting am Ammersee began as usual at 9:30 a.m. and led to the unexpected spectacle over the city. Passengers should be aware that such dramatic effects can occasionally occur.
A day full of steam
The Ammersee steam train has a tradition at Pentecost and not only offers nostalgic rides, but also a variety of leisure activities for the whole family. The next trips are planned for Sundays, July 13th, 20th and 27th and August 3rd and 10th, 2025. Departures take place from Augsburg main station, as well as from Augsburg-Hochzoll and Mering. The photo stops in St. Ottilien are particularly popular, where travelers can observe the operation of the steam locomotive for around 20 minutes.
It's not just the trip itself that's an experience: there are numerous leisure opportunities along Lake Ammersee. Swimming, sailing and hiking are very popular, while paddle steamers and mini golf offer additional variety. If you want to enjoy a snack in the “Alte Villa” beer garden in Utting, you will also find perfect relaxation there.
Where is the journey going?
The travel times are perfectly planned for a day trip. The steam locomotives are on the tracks at Augsburg Central Station every day from 9:32 a.m., arriving in Utting at 10:53 a.m. The return journey is easily organized so that families and day-trippers can enjoy their time on the water to the fullest. If you want to spend more time in the city, you can spend some time in the Augsburg Railway Park, one of the largest industrial monuments in Bavaria, where, among other things, you can marvel at numerous historic locomotives and an impressive model railway.
The attractiveness of steam train rides is reflected in the ticket prices: adults pay 42 euros for a ride, children under 15 can get on board for just 21 euros. Information about timetables and ticket purchases can be found on the official Ammersee Steam Railway website.
The steam railway experience not only delights railway fans, but also impresses with its seamless connection to regional museums, such as the Augsburg Railway Park, where enthusiasts can be amazed by steam engines and historical exhibits. Here the railway experience of the last centuries comes to life.
With exciting views, nostalgic flair and excellent leisure opportunities, the Ammersee steam railway offers a highlight for the whole family - and with smoke that doesn't come from a fire but from a real steam locomotive, the trip will be remembered fondly.
