Dome of the Perlacht Tower finally withdrawn - renovation starts!

Augsburg, Deutschland - It is a rainy day in Augsburg, but the weather does not stop the workers from renovating one of the oldest and most important towers in the city. On July 24, 2025, all signs are on progress in the pearlacht tower. The dome of the building, which is over 1000 years old, had to be removed in order to enable extensive renovation work. The work started early in the morning - at 3 a.m. it was called "Make everything ready!" - And the long -awaited dome acceptance was planned for the period between 5.30 a.m. and 8 a.m. But until the dome finally took off at 8.45 a.m.

With a crane and an additional lifting crane, the dome hovered to a height of about 60 meters and landed safely in front of the Augsburg town hall. This is an important step for the renovation of the pearl tower, which has been closed to visitors since 2017. At that time, static problems and facade damage were found, which are now to be remedied. The city has also commented on the security risks that were created by exposed construction iron and an exceeded load limit.

renovation with historical value

The renovation of the pearl tower, which was originally built in 989 as a watch tower and later served as a bell tower, is more than just a structural measure. The work is necessary to preserve the appearance and statics of the tower, which received its current onion hood in 1612-1618. A new, higher lifting crane also had to be procured for the dome, since the dome decrease had to be moved twice due to too strong wind. The total renovation costs amount to around 9 million euros, whereby the financing is secured by funding and urban funds.

The planned conversion on the way to a contemporary leisure offer is particularly exciting. From August 11th the dome will be accessible again, and with the new museum shop, which will serve as an entrance, visitors can immerse yourself in the history of the tower. Access is granted via steep, historical shaft stairs, which lead to the climbing staircase, which will be impressive in the turmine.

A look into the future

  • The new staircase has a height of 32 meters, which corresponds to about eleven normal floors.
  • Visitors can look forward to a small Gothic space that will be accessible again after over 400 years.
  • Around 80 years after the devastating bombing of 1944, the original construction structures come into play.
  • A viewing pavilion will also be part of the renewal, donated by the famous master builder Elias Holl.

The viewpoint will not only offer a wonderful view over the city, but will even extend to the Alpine Kamm when the weather is nice. For the city of Augsburg, the restoration of the pearl tower is not only a cultural, but also a tourist highlight. The traditionally lived festivals, such as the tower run and the Turamic festival, are to be organized again after the renovation and revive the cultural life of the city.

The perlaughter tower is not only safer, but also more beautiful after the renovation, and offers a new experience for all Augsburg visitors. The city will be happy to celebrate one of its most beautiful landmarks again and to invite us all to marvel at the city from above. The work is in full swing and we are looking forward to what is still coming. More on this reports [Süddeutsche] here and also [augsburg.de] here .
