In Augsburg, the decision to create a model route on Fuggerstrasse is causing lively discussions. The city council recently allocated €325,000 to repave the sidewalks and narrow the roadway. This is done with the aim of creating a more attractive cityscape. There are also plans to create a green strip while leaving existing trees untouched. Work is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2025 or beginning of 2026 in order to actively involve citizens and present the first 30 meter long sample area. The total budget is 350,000 euros, which also includes 25,000 euros from a reserve. Augsburger Allgemeine reports that the original renovation plans, which called for a four-row avenue of trees, were deemed too expensive.

While the plans met with approval from CSU and Green supporters, the SPD expressed strong concerns. In the eyes of Florian Freund, the parliamentary group leader of the SPD, this is a purely cosmetic approach before the local elections. The political opposition also criticizes the fact that the funds could be better invested in other areas, such as cleaning school buildings. Nevertheless, construction officer Steffen Kercher defends the project. He emphasizes that the estimated cost of 7 million euros is a significant improvement compared to the originally planned 18 million euros. Kercher describes Fuggerstrasse as an “open wound” in the cityscape, which is intended to underline the necessity of the measures.

A parking garage under Fuggerstrasse?

Also on the table is a proposal to build a modern parking garage under Fuggerstrasse. Loud PER AUGSBURG is an offer from Prof. Dr. Walter Ignaz proposed that it could offer around 670 parking spaces. This project could alleviate the inner-city traffic problem and improve Fugger Boulevard, but has not yet been officially addressed by the city council.

The group leader Dr. Rudolf Holzapfel calls for discussions to be held with the investor as soon as possible in order to discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of the new parking garage. He emphasizes the need for a new traffic concept, as the existing parking garages can no longer meet future requirements. The discussion about this should be addressed to the city council as quickly as possible. Who knows, perhaps this idea will soon become reality and could further stimulate the debates about Fuggerstrasse.

The discussion about the model route and the planned parking garage illustrates how much citizen participation should be integrated into the planning of urban development projects.
