Augsburg becomes an Airbus city: historic name change completed!

Aircraft construction in Augsburg has a new name! From July 1, 2025, Premium Aerotec will officially be renamed Airbus GmbH. However, this name change, which coincides with a change in the company structure, was carried out without much public attention. This means a profound change for the city of Augsburg, which is considered a historic pioneering location for industrial aircraft construction in Germany, as the city will now officially become an Airbus city for the first time. Augsburg has a long tradition in this sector, dating back more than 100 years and including major milestones such as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke, Messerschmitt and Dasa, to name just a few. [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/augsburg/augsburg-neuer-unternehmenname-aus-premium-aerotec-wird-airbus-110253718) reports that the new name will soon be visible everywhere at the factories in the city.

The rebranding of Premium Aerotec did not come without challenges. The company had gone through turbulent times in recent years and even had to fight for its existence. Originally, a break-up and sale was planned, but massive pressure from IG Metall and the works council led to the company remaining within the Airbus Group and being reorganized. According to B4B Schwaben, Airbus also has plans to realign its entire aircraft business in Germany. It is expected that Premium Aerotec GmbH will gradually be transformed into a new holding legal entity that will focus on the various activities in civil aircraft manufacturing.

Structure and future

A crucial innovation is the founding of Airbus Aerostructures GmbH, which has been under the leadership of Dr. Andre Walter is standing. This new subsidiary includes four main locations: Hamburg with around 4,300 employees, Stade with 1,600, Nordenham with 2,200 and Bremen with around 350 jobs. Interestingly, around 500 employees from the development areas and central functions work for Airbus Aerostructures at the Augsburg and Varel locations. In the long term, these locations are to be integrated into the newly formed Premium Aerotec Industry business unit, which will also remain under the Airbus umbrella.

Another exciting aspect is the planned move of the headquarters from Augsburg to Hamburg. This is likely to influence not only the structure of the company, but also jobs and economic development in Augsburg, where an important chapter ends after 109 years of aircraft construction.

Overall, it shows that the aircraft manufacturer, which was once threatened by major restructuring, is now embarking on a new era. The name change may not have been accompanied by much fanfare, but it brings a breath of fresh air and new opportunities for Augsburg. The city will have to continue to assert itself as an important location in the aviation industry.
