60 years of town twinning: Ceremony with Brandl and music enjoyment in Amberg!
In the charming town of Amberg, the long-standing town partnership with Périgueux is duly celebrated. To mark the 60th anniversary, a reading by Friedrich Brandl will take place in the city theater on Thursday, November 20th at 8 p.m. On this special evening, the author presents stories and poems about France and its sister city Périgueux. Sebastian Birner, a music and mathematics teacher from Amberg who deals intensively with jazz and is also known as the co-founder of the band “Grögötz Weißbir”, will provide the musical background. The reading promises an attractive mix of cultural heritage and musical enjoyment.
The town twinning between Amberg and Périgueux has a long history, which began in 1965 when Brandl traveled to Périgueux with the Catholic Youth. “The friendships that were made back then have remained alive to this day,” reports Brandl. Admission to the reading costs ten euros and includes a drink and access to the studio stage. Tickets are available from the Amberg Tourist Information Office, and you can also order them by phone or email and purchase them in the city theater's web shop.
A celebration concert for the anniversary
In addition to the reading, there will be a celebratory concert that will provide acoustic accompaniment to the celebratory highlights of the anniversary. The concert in the city theater is organized by the Ensemble Vocal de Périgueux, which has existed for 71 years, and the Amberg choir community. This musical community has been active since 1980 and offers a rich repertoire ranging from a cappella music from the Renaissance to Baroque to contemporary compositions.
Dieter Müller, who has been the director of the Amberg choir community since 2007, will work on the concert management together with Anne Maugard, who will take over the artistic direction of the Ensemble Vocal de Périgueux in autumn 2024. The musical connection between the two choirs goes back to the 1960s, when the first contact arose between the Englhardt singing group from Amberg and the ensemble in Périgueux.
A look at the program design
The performance will include a wide range of works by well-known composers, including Lully, Fauré, Debussy, Schubert, Mendelssohn and Brahms. The proceeds from the concerts benefit both choirs and thus further support the musical friendship between Amberg and Périgueux. Piano accompaniment during the concert will be provided by both Ludmila Portnova and Claire Marin, both members of their respective choral singing groups.
Whether at a reading or a concert, the musical and literary performances promise a romantic evening that impressively celebrates the connection between the two cities. So if you want to refresh old memories or make new acquaintances, you shouldn't miss these events.
