Water losses in the Vils-Naab Association: Red alarm level for 2025!

Schloss-Stadl, 92274 Schmidmühlen, Deutschland - On Tuesday, June 11, 2025, the meeting of the specialty of the Vils-Naab Group took place in Schloss-Stadl in Schmidmühlen. Several important topics were discussed that affect the water supply in the region. The focus was on the funded amounts of water, the water losses in 2024 and the business plan for 2025. The association reported that the total amount of water funded in 2024 was 207,577 cubic meters, which was a slight decline compared to 2023 (208,386 cubic meters). At the same time, it was found that the amount of water sold and removed fell to 180,525 cubic meters, while it was still at 189,281 cubic meters in the previous year.

The increasing water losses, which were 13 percent in 2024, should be observed carefully compared to 9 percent in 2023. This makes it clear that there is a need for action in the infrastructure. However, the declines in the resolved water pipe broken from November 2024 to March 2025 give the reason to hope that appropriate measures have an effect. In today's session, the exchange of a leaky house slide in Bubenhof and a pipe break in Scheckenberg was discussed.

business plan 2025 and investments

Another central point of the session was the business plan for 2025. The draft recording of the budget statute was already sent and unanimously accepted at the end of October 2024. Various investments of a total of 288,000 euros have been decided for the coming year in order to optimize water supply sustainably. Expenditures are intended for the extension of water law permission, the improvement of the infrastructure in the Emhof waterworks and the purchase of new radio water meters.

The planned loan recording amounts to 114,750 euros, and the volume of fees will amount to 375,000 euros in 2025. In addition, there were no objections to the changes to the budget statute and the economic plan, which indicates broad approval within the association.

water shortage and challenges

In a broader context, the special -purpose association is not alone. In other German cities, such as Berlin, drinking water supply is also faced with challenges. The Berlin Senate has reacted with the Water master plan to ensure security of supply. This is done by measures to limit mixed water overflows, the protection of the waters and the preparation for the effects of climate change, which can also be felt in Bavaria. For example, the dry year 2018 was a stress test for water supply all over Germany, with an increased water requirement that put our systems to the test, as the DVGW reports.

The need to protect the water resources and to ensure both the quality and the security of supply is an urgent topic for all water suppliers. Innovative techniques and comprehensive renovation projects are necessary to meet the challenges of climate change and the growing water requirement. The experience and measures from Berlin could also serve as a suggestion for the Vils-Naab group.
