Red alarm level: lack of groundwater threatens in Altötting and Mühldorf!

Altötting, Deutschland - The Altötting, Mühldorf and Rosenheim region faces a serious challenge: the groundwater level drops and the concerns of the population with it. As Innsalzach24 reports, a study by the Institute for Social-Ecological research (ISOE) shows that the districts of Altötting and Mühldorf as well as the city of Rosenheim are acute lack of lack of groundwater. It is an alarming warning of the federal government that should make people in the region act.

The consequences of the drought cannot be overlooked: the groundwater levels decrease, the harvests in agriculture could be at risk and the drinking water supply ended in a critical situation. In an interplay with the climate, the floors dried out, while the water routing of the rivers increasingly decreases. Agricultural companies that rely on water should not exactly do good business in this situation.

increasing threat from climate change

climate change is clearly shown in the region, the planet heats up, the precipitation decreases and at the same time the water requirement in agriculture increases. This ensures a vicious circle, as the Goethe University in Frankfurt adds in a publication. Dwindling rainfall and increasing demand make the groundwater rare. This can be observed in many areas. There is also a decline in groundwater levels in Germany, which endangers not only the water supply, but also the drinking water quality. Pollutants get into the groundwater through contaminated surface water, which exacerbates the situation.

Another aspect that researchers emphasize: inside of universities such as the University of Koblenz-Landau is the urgent need for new concepts to improve groundwater education. Claims that wetlands and bogs dry out - a fact that endangers the biodiversity in the region - are also in the room. Especially in Altötting and Mühldorf, where the region is in the transition area between wetter and drier areas, crucial changes can be observed.

Current location and outlook

It looks like there are currently no acute supply of supply from public water suppliers, especially in the Rosenheim district. The abundant rainfall of the past year has filled up the groundwater levels. However, the low-water information service in Bavaria warns of the long-term developments in drought that needs to be observed seriously.

Industry, especially companies with high water requirements such as dairies and breweries, also increases the water withdrawals, which are not part of the public water supply system. This represents an additional challenge, even if there are no acute threats at the moment. Future declines of the groundwater levels can be expected particularly in dry summers, which could further fuel the situation in the region.

For the citizens: Inside and the responsible authorities it says: there is something! An open dialogue about suitable measures and the development of regional approaches to water management are now required in order to counteract the dwindling water resource and its consequences.
