Würzburg in an alarm mood: Save water - that's how we save the resources!

In the hot summer time, we are required to deal with our water resources particularly carefully. The Würzburger Versorgungs- and Verkehrs-GmbH (WVV) published an urgent call for saving water on July 1, 2025. In a regional context, it was found that the rainfall in Würzburg and the surrounding area is significantly lower than in other parts of Bavaria. This worrying development has led to the fact that hardly any new groundwater could be formed.

More and more people, including private individuals, farmers and industry, are required to reduce their water consumption. Climate change in combination with a growing population pressure brings additional challenges that put the water supply in the region under pressure. The WVV recommends making small changes in everyday life to counteract water consumption. For example, shower habits could be covered or gardens with rainwater instead of drinking water. This call shows how important it is to become aware of the resources and make our contribution to sustainability - because "there is something"!

background to the water shortage

But what is behind this water shortage? According to the Federal Environment Agency , the situation is complex and not just due to climate change. The research of the Wadklim project has provided important findings that are part of the German adaptation strategy to climate change. For example, not only the climatic conditions are a problem, but also water quality problems such as the nitrate pollution and the influence of mining. In addition, the demand for water in agricultural and urban areas increases.

The numbers are particularly dramatic: Germany loses about 2.5 cubic kilometers of fresh water annually, which corresponds to the volume of Lake Constance. This is particularly evident in drought, as between 2018 and 2021: During this time, the groundwater levels sank drastically, which, according to ZDF , has reached the deepest levels in some regions for over 30 years. Over 70% of our drinking water comes from groundwater, and the progressive loss of this precious good is alarming.

call for cooperation

The problem of water shortages not only requires individual measures, but also working at a broader level. Political decision -makers are required to integrate solution strategies that promote sustainable water use. Initiatives to improve water retention, increase in efficiency and to support natural ecosystems are central to prevent future usage conflicts. It is also emphasized that regular data surveys for water use are essential to create transparency.

water remains a valuable resource, and it is time that everyone involved becomes aware of their responsibility. Let us tackle and rethink - because every drop saved counts!
