Würzburg in a state of alarm: Save water – this is how we save resources!

In the hot summer we are required to be particularly careful with our water resources. On July 1, 2025, the Würzburger Liefer- und Verkehrs-GmbH (WVV) published an urgent call to save water. In a regional context, it was found that rainfall in Würzburg and the surrounding area is significantly lower than in other parts of Bavaria. This worrying development, particularly in the last 20 years, characterized by persistent drought, has meant that hardly any new groundwater could be formed.

More and more people, including private individuals, farmers and industry, are being asked to reduce their water consumption. Climate change combined with growing population pressure brings additional challenges that are putting pressure on water supplies in the region. The WVV recommends making small changes in everyday life to counteract water consumption. For example, showering habits could be reconsidered or gardens could be irrigated with rainwater instead of drinking water. This call shows how important it is to become aware of resources and to make our contribution to sustainability - because “there is something there”!

Background to water scarcity

But what is behind this water shortage? According to that Federal Environment Agency The situation is complex and not just due to climate change. The research of the WADKlim project has provided important findings that are part of the German adaptation strategy to climate change. For example, not only climatic conditions are a problem, but also water quality problems such as nitrate pollution and the influence of mining. In addition, the demand for water in agricultural and urban areas is increasing.

The numbers are particularly dramatic: Germany loses around 2.5 cubic kilometers of fresh water every year, which corresponds to the volume of Lake Constance. This is particularly evident in drought periods, such as between 2018 and 2021: During this time, groundwater levels fell drastically, which is loud ZDF reached its lowest levels in over 30 years in some regions. Over 70% of our drinking water comes from groundwater, and the continued loss of this precious resource is alarming.

Call for collaboration

The problem of water scarcity requires not only individual action, but also cooperation on a broader level. Political decision-makers are required to integrate solution strategies that promote sustainable water use. Initiatives to improve water retention, increase efficiency and support natural ecosystems are central to preventing future conflicts of use. It is also emphasized that regular data collection on water use is essential to create transparency.

Water remains a valuable resource and it is time for everyone involved to recognize their responsibilities. Let’s tackle things together and rethink things – because every drop saved counts!
