Würzburg Baskets glide to an 82:71 victory – comeback in a class of its own!
An exciting duel in the sold-out tectake ARENA ended with a clear victory for the Fitness First Würzburg Baskets, who defeated the EWE Baskets Oldenburg 82:71 on December 6, 2025. This game was the start of the 9th matchday of the easyCredit BBL and confirmed the Würzburg team's return after a difficult run.
The game started slowly for Würzburg, who trailed 39:44 at halftime. Oldenburg started the game strongly and initially led 8-2. But the Baskets quickly got back into the game and responded with a 7-0 run, with Davion Mintz sinking his first three-pointer.
Turnaround in the second half
After the break, Würzburg proved that they had the necessary fitness and determination. With the help of a physically robust defense and strong rebounding, they took control of the game. In the third quarter they increased the lead to 71:56. Coach Sasa Filipovski had his hands full preparing his players for the coming challenge, especially after the many ball losses in the first half.
Davion Mintz was the game's top scorer with 20 points, followed by Marcus Carr with 15 and Johnathan Stove with 10 points. Würzburg dominated in rebounding (41 to 29) and had a hit rate of 48% compared to Oldenburg's only 39%. The yield in the zone was particularly remarkable: Würzburg scored 42 points there, while Oldenburg only managed 20 points.
To the next game
The Würzburg Baskets now continue with an away game against NINERS Chemnitz and a duel in the Basketball Champions League against Pallacanestro Trieste. The team, which had started the competitive phase strongly at the beginning of the season, found its strong game again after the first defeat in the BBL Cup against EWE Baskets.
The EWE Baskets Oldenburg, on the other hand, had an intensive preparation period before this game after they were able to rest a bit due to an international break. The club entered with a new player, Tomislav Zubcic, who looks to prove to be a valuable addition. But despite these innovations, they couldn't stop Würzburg and now have to work on their form. The next opportunity to do so will be on Friday, when they will be without Kyle Lofton and will look to improve their course on the season.
The Würzburg Baskets under coach Filipovski can be happy to have found their form in time after only winning two of the last eight competitive games. There was support from the return of Alen Pjanic, while Ryan Schwieger sat on the sidelines and has to get fit again. “The second half was crucial,” said Filipovski. “We showed what we’re made of.” After this game, fans should be optimistic about the rest of the season.
