Former dean Erwin Meier dies at the age of 83 - Würzburg is in mourning
On August 13, 2023, the Catholic community suffered a bitter loss: Pastor i. R. Erwin Meier died at the age of 83. Born on February 27, 1942 in Oberschleichach, his life was marked by a deep commitment to the church and the people around him. The priest was ordained on June 28, 1970 in Würzburg by Bishop Josef Stangl and has since gone through impressive stages in his career, culminating in his retirement in 2012.
At the beginning of his career he gained experience in various communities, where he completed temporary positions in Holzkirchen, Sandberg and Schmalwasser as well as chaplaincy in Krombach, Sommerau and Oberleichtersbach. In 1973 he took over the management of the parish in Zimmern. His leadership qualities were soon recognized: in 1978 he became pastor of Obervolkach and just two years later was elected deputy dean of Kitzingen. From 1985 to 1995 he served as dean of this region.
Ways in pastoral care
Erwin Meier was not only a priest, but also a committed military chaplain. In 1986 he was appointed to Volkach, where he took up this important position. From 1987 he led the parishes of Gaibach and Rimbach. In a progressive turn, in 1995 he took over the parishes of Waigolshausen and Hergolshausen, combined with the Theilheim curate. During these years in particular, he was tireless in his commitment to the community. He spent his last active years as a chaplain at the St. Alfons Monastery in Eichelsdorf before retiring in 2012.
Erwin Meier leaves behind many people and families who were shaped by his dedication and faith. The organization of the requiem and burial is still pending, but it is certain that the community in Würzburg and beyond mourns him.
A farewell to a dedicated pastor
A life for the church and its members – that was Erwin Meier. His mark will remain, and his achievements in pastoral care are a shining example for many. Although his soul now rests in peace, his legacy will live on in people's hearts.
