Opening of the Jurahaus Trail: 35 historical treasures in the cycling paradise!

A new cycle path in Altmühlfranken provides a piece of history on two wheels! On August 14, 2025, the opening of the Jurahaus-Pfad took place, a circular cycle path that leads participants to 35 unique Jurahausen in the cities of Treuchtlingen and Weißenburg. The initiators of this project are the Altmühlfranken Future Initiative, the Jurahaus-Verein e. V. as well as the two cities, which are working together to make the architectural heritage visible. The cycle path is 28 kilometers long in total and starts comfortably in Treuchtlingen.

The Jura houses, known for their plain facades and small windows, are characterized by a gently sloping slate roof made of limestone. These buildings have been part of the Altmühl region for around 800 years and are themselves part of UNESCO's intangible heritage. Their special construction is based on the local Jurassic marble, which was created in the Jurassic Sea around 150 million years ago and became a striking part of the regional identity. The circular route takes cyclists through beautiful places such as Graben, Dettenheim, Haardt, Heuberg, Suffersheim, Schambach and Dietfurt, where they have the opportunity to find out more about the historical use and aspects relevant to renovation of the Jura houses. For this purpose, plexiglass boards were installed on the buildings, which provide valuable information, as falk-report.de report.

Culture meets nature

A special highlight of the opening ceremony was the lecture by Eva Martiny, chairwoman of the Jurahaus-Verein e. V. She spoke about the limestone roof, which is not only a unique feature of the Jura houses, but also provides a glimpse into the past of the Altmühl region. During the ceremony, District Administrator Manuel Westphal thanked the participants and the Jura house owners for their commitment and dedication to architectural heritage.

The tour map and the route profile for the Jurahaus Path are available on the Altmühltal Nature Park website and help you to easily find and enjoy the individual stations. The positive feedback from the first cyclists shows that the path is not only an enrichment for the region, but also for all visitors and residents.
