Carnival through the ages
Mardi Gras, also known as Mardi Gras or Shrovetide, is the liveliest time of the year, celebrated before the 40 days of Lent. The term “Fasching” is derived from the word “Vaschang,” which describes this as the last opportunity to consume alcohol before Lent. In Bavaria, Austria and East Germany “Fasching” is used, while in the Rhineland “Carnival” is part of everyday life. An interesting fact Northern Bavaria takes up: Carnival has long-standing traditions that go back to the 11th century and are often characterized by large street celebrations and the expulsion of evil spirits.
This year, visitors can look forward to special dates: Women's Carnival falls on February 12th, 2026, Rose Monday on February 16th, 2026, followed by Carnival on February 17th. The carnival holidays in Bavaria are from February 16th to 20th, 2026, giving families the opportunity to take part in the celebrations.
The region not only has a lively carnival culture, but also culinary highlights. The filled donuts are a must at any celebration. While they are called “Berliners” in other regions, they are widespread here in Bavaria and are particularly popular at this time.
So be ready for an exciting and festive time in Unterallgäu! Whether with parades, balls or just enjoying a donut, the fifth season promises a lot of fun for old and young this year. Here’s to a colorful and happy carnival season! Further information about the events is also available New Facts where a comprehensive overview of the pageant sessions and balls is provided.
