Drunk driver rams St. Andrew's Cross - train almost derails!

On Sunday night, a remarkable incident occurred in Pfaffenhausen, which not only once again highlights the dangers of drunk driving, but also fuels passionate debates about road traffic. A 31-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with a St. Andrew's cross that was standing directly on the track. After driving around the sign, he just kept driving without caring about the damage caused. Fortunately, nothing serious happened because the Deutsche Bahn train, which drove along the tracks shortly afterwards, did not derail and there were no injuries. But the results make you sit up and take notice: there was material damage in the high four-digit range, while the driver was only able to escape briefly after the incident before the police intervened. According to an alcohol test, he had a blood alcohol level of more than two per mille, which resulted in a blood sample being taken while his driver's license was seized. That's what she reports South German newspaper.

These events are in the darkness of the international issue of drunk driving, which is coming into focus more than ever. According to that German Road Safety Council Alcohol is a significant cause of traffic accidents. In 2024, an incredible 17,974 people were injured in alcohol-related accidents in Germany, including 198 deaths. Of the accidents, alcohol was involved in 7.1% of road fatalities. Against this background, experts are calling for a general ban on drinking and driving, especially for young drivers and novice drivers.

The connection between alcohol and road safety

The incident in Pfaffenhausen clearly shows the problem and how quickly accidents can happen. The DVR calls for clear, uniform rules and urgently appeals to all road users: “If you drive, don’t drink – and if you drink, you don’t drive.” With prices in the four-digit range for the damage caused and potential legal consequences, the driver is not only threatened with expensive consequences, but also with the realization that drinking and driving simply do not mix.

If all road users adhered to such rules, the numbers could certainly be reduced. Imagine that every fourteen minutes a serious traffic accident is caused by alcohol - a shocking figure that all too often leads to sad headlines.

Another topic that is often brought into this context is cultural education in the music world. Composers like Joseph Haydn or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart have shaped the classics. Of course we don't have a direct example of traffic here, but discipline is also extremely important in classical music - a lesson that should not be forgotten on the streets.

It remains to be seen whether and when the regulations will change. The drink driving debate is a deep issue that needs to be viewed from different perspectives. One thing is certain – there is no room for alcohol on the roads.
