Gäubodenvolksfest 2025: Everything about the spectacular opening in Straubing!

The Straubinger Gäubodenvolksfest opened its doors on August 8th and will be celebrated to the fullest until August 18th. With over 1.3 million expected visitors and an area of around 100,000 square meters, it is the second largest folk festival in Bavaria, just after the Munich Oktoberfest. The first guests streamed onto the festival grounds at 4 p.m., while the traditional parade took place at 5:30 p.m. with around 3,500 participants, over 80 musical and traditional costume groups and festive floats. The parade stretched from Landshuter Straße to the festival meadow and created an exuberant atmosphere among the participants and spectators.

The beer price this year is between 12.90 and 12.95 euros, a moderate increase compared to previous years. In the festival area, visitors can expect seven large festival tents with a total of around 27,500 seats, as well as around 130 rides, snack stands and entertainment options. New this year are two contactless, free sunscreen stands and a drinking water fountain near the Ferris wheel. Security forces also ensure a high level of security - including through video surveillance and a general ban on knives, which also includes deer trappers. The authorities have coordinated a strict security concept for the events and have set up 80 access barriers, including around 60 concrete “Lego bricks”, around the festival site.

Voices and opinions

But the focus is not only on the events, but also on the opinions and experiences of the visitors. In the editorial blog, readers report on their experiences at the festival and express both positive and negative impressions. Statements like “It's a shame to suffer” and “The fun is unbearable” sums up the mood. Some visitors do not seem to be completely satisfied with the attractions and the crowds, as reflected in one of the comments: “You can do better anyway”. Such words suggest that although the festival has many attractions, it also brings with it challenges that are a topic of conversation.

A related quote, incorrectly attributed to Albert Einstein, says: “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” These words seem to sum up the ambivalent feeling of many visitors who, despite minor shortcomings and critical opinions, uphold the tradition and conviviality of the folk festival.

The editorial team invites everyone who is interested to continue to follow the reporting on the Gäubodenvolksfest and to share their own thoughts and experiences. A unique opportunity to become part of the Bavarian festival culture and collect lasting memories.
