Honors for Lower Bavaria: Municipal Medal of Merit for three deserving people
The Municipal Medal of Merit in bronze was awarded in a ceremonial setting on October 29, 2025 in Lower Bavaria. The ceremony attracted numerous personalities who were honored for their years of commitment to local self-government. As regio-aktuell24.de reports, District President Rainer Haselbeck emphasized the great importance of voluntary work and called living democracy one of the supporting pillars of our society.
A total of thirteen values and responsible minds from Lower Bavarian cities and communities were honored. Among those honored are city, community and district councilors as well as mayors who keep communities alive with their tireless efforts. Haselbeck described the local elected officials as “designers and bridge builders” who work day after day for the common good.
Honored personalities
The Municipal Medal of Merit is awarded annually by the Bavarian State Minister of the Interior, Sport and Integration, Joachim Herrmann, and is an expression of gratitude and respect for the long-term commitment to local self-government. This year the medals went to:
This award is not only praise for the work done, but also motivation to continue to face the challenges of our time. Issues such as increasing social spending, migration, climate protection and affordable housing required creative action and the ability to find solutions. “We are faced with major tasks, but without reliable financing and reducing bureaucracy we can achieve little,” continued Haselbeck.
The medal in detail
The Municipal Merit Medal is awarded in gold, silver or bronze and has a diameter of 50 mm. The Bavarian state coat of arms adorns the front, while the back has the inscription “For services to local self-government”. “It is important to emphasize that this medal is not to be understood as a medal or decoration,” explains the Bavarian State Ministry in an announcement dated April 24, 2025. This regulation applies from June 1, 2025.
The award is an honorable recognition for many years of work, which takes place in an often challenging environment. The commitment of the honored personalities is a sign that local self-government is alive and thriving. So it's no wonder that the association is very popular with citizens who are strongly committed to their communities.
With the awarding of the medals, a piece of history is also written: the recognition of people who often act in the background, but are nevertheless of essential importance for our coexistence in the cities and communities. These awards are an important signal for future generations – volunteering remains a pillar of our society.
