Bavarian Regiobahn secures operations until 2043: A future path for Rosenheim!

The Bavarian railway network remains in proven hands: The Bavarian Regiobahn (BRB) has secured the tender for the Rosenheimer Kreuz electric network and will operate the regional train connections between Munich and the Austrian border in Salzburg and Kufstein until at least 2043. This good news comes from the Bavarian Railway Company (BEG), which is acting on behalf of the Bavarian Ministry of Transport in this matter. The BRB has been active since December 2013 and will now continue operations until at least December 2043.

As part of this agreement, the existing transport service will be maintained, which takes many passengers from A to B every day - around 17 million per year, to be precise. The Rosenheim E-Netz has an impressive route length of 260 kilometers and records around 4.9 million train kilometers annually, making it the largest network among the five operated by the BRB in Bavaria. A new transport contract will come into force in December 2029 and run until 2043. This stability enables long-term planning for the mobility landscape in the region.

Travel longer and more comfortably

The BRB will use 35 modernized Stadler FLIRT 3 electric railcars in the coming years. The vehicles used will not only be redesigned, but will also be given a new shine by being thoroughly cleaned and refreshed. This includes renewals of seat and back cushions as well as headrests to offer passengers the best possible comfort. These trains are barrier-free, air-conditioned and reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. In addition, spacious multi-purpose areas, modern passenger information systems and free WiFi are offered.

The planning also envisages the inclusion of an improved range of seats and bicycle parking spaces in the new contract. For school transport and on weekends, the BEG will request longer trains with more seating capacity in order to meet the requirements resulting from growing demand. Between Munich and Rosenheim the timetable remains at a comfortable hourly frequency, while at peak times even half-hourly services are offered.

The look forward

Attention is not only focused on regional trains: there are also larger plans to electrify the rail network in Bavaria. Although most trains in the Free State are already electric, only around 55 percent of the tracks are equipped with overhead lines. Together with the federal government and the Free State, Deutsche Bahn is planning to install almost 1,000 kilometers of new overhead lines, which should lead to the electrification of over 70 percent of the rail network. The remaining routes will be covered by hybrid, battery or hydrogen trains.

These developments are not only important for commuters, but contribute to sustainable mobility and climate protection—an important consideration for the future of the region and beyond. The electric trains of the Rosenheim E-Network will be part of this growing infrastructure, which also promotes cross-border connections.

This progress shows that not only is the rail network being modernized in Bavaria, but local public transport is also still on the right track to play a future-oriented role.
