New student dormitory in Rhön-Grabfeld: A milestone for education!
On October 30, 2025, the time had come: the new student residence in the Rhön-Grabfeld district was ceremoniously inaugurated. The first students have been able to live there on Franz-Marschall-Straße, right next to the Jakob-Preh-Schule, since the beginning of the school year in September. At the inauguration, District Administrator Thomas Habermann emphasized the importance of educating young people in the region and made it clear that the new building should not only improve the environment for the students, but also increase the competitiveness of the location. Michael Wimmel, the headmaster of the Jakob Preh School, describes this day as crucial for vocational training in the entire area.
The idea of building a student dormitory was first discussed 16 years ago. As a result, the need and desire for construction became increasingly clear due to the difficult accommodation situation and legal requirements. A district council resolution in the summer of 2018 finally took the decisive step: shell construction began in December 2022 and commissioning took place just in time for the start of the school year.
Special features of the dormitory
The dormitory, which is run by Kolping Jugendwohnen, offers the young people comprehensive support. These include, for example, joint activities that are intended to ensure harmonious coexistence. Remaining work, such as greening the surrounding area, is still pending, but the first students from the 13th graduating classes moved in in the first week of school. The feedback is consistently positive: the Rhön-Grabfeld district is more than satisfied with the demand so far and the initial occupancy.
The modern building was built using a hybrid construction method that combines solid construction with wood and clay construction. With a photovoltaic system and a connection to the local district heating network, the residence also shows a great commitment to energy efficiency.
Training opportunities in Germany
The student residence plays a crucial role in the education of young people. There are two types of training in Germany: school-based vocational training, which takes place at technical schools and vocational schools, and in-company training, which has a dual structure. In order to find a training position, sufficient knowledge of German is required, as exams and lessons take place in German. Anyone traveling from abroad can stay in Germany for up to nine months to look for a training position.
For many of these students, admission to the new dormitory is the first step towards a promising professional future. It is clear: In the Rhön-Grabfeld region, special attention is paid to promoting education and development, and the student residence will make a valuable contribution to this.
What happens next remains exciting, as the official opening ceremony is planned for the end of October 2025. The new home for young talents will certainly bring with it many positive stories and developments.
