Interior Minister raises the alarm: Violence in the football stadium must be stopped as soon as possible!

At the spring conference, the interior ministers of the federal government and the federal states gave professional football with a clear work order: more must be done for safety in the stadium. Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) was dissatisfied with the progress that have been achieved since the top meeting with DFB and DFL in October 2022. He criticized the implementation of stadium bans, which is still inadequate. "The responsibility lies with DFB and DFL," emphasized Herrmann and conveyed the feeling that there is an urgent need for action.

The Minister from Lower Saxony, Daniela Behrens (SPD), added that specific measures must be taken in stadiums. Especially in high risk games such as derbies, the violent behavior of aggressive groups should not be tolerated. She appealed to the clubs to ensure more protection through security measures such as cameras and stage bans. "The measures that the DFB describes are often not implemented in practice," Behrens criticized, which in turn could be a burden to the police and the general public.

joint efforts for security

On October 18, 2024, a meeting between inner and sports ministers and representatives of DFB and DFL took place in Munich to discuss safety aspects about football games. The invitation comes from Herrmann and Nancy Faeser, the Federal Minister of the Interior. The aim is to preserve the high security standards in the stadiums and at the same time reduce possible police operations. An exciting development is the planned establishment of a cross-departmental expert commission on stadium safety, which should include police and fan representatives. This commission should deal with individually disturbing behavior in particular to avoid collective penalties.

in the Bundesliga, 2nd Bundesliga, 3rd league, in the DFB Cup and in UEFA club competitions, around 26.48 million people visited the games in the 2022/23 season. Nevertheless, the number of injuries at 1,176 is not worrying, which only corresponds to a share of 0.005 percent. In addition, 96 percent of the stadium visitors stated that they feel safe during the match day. This positive perception should not hide the fact that DFB and DFL itself recognize the need for action and want to work closely with clubs, fan organizations and the police to ensure a safe stadium experience.

prevention of violence in football

The concern for violence in football is particularly reinforced by a tragic event by an international youth football tournament in Frankfurt. Here a 15-year-old hovers in mortal danger after a fight. Ronny Zimmermann, the 1st DFB Vice President, shaked the incident, who emphasizes the need for violence prevention in amateur football. In this context, the DFB is already implementing several preventive measures to contain violence and discrimination in football.

The concept "Fair is more" bundles various offers for violence prevention and intervention. It comprises three central building blocks: the promotion of Fair Play, the early detection of violence and the processing of incidents of violence. In addition, there are already contact points for such incidents in all 21 state associations that have been set up since the 2020/21 season.

In order to secure the safety and fairness in football, numerous additional measures are taken, such as the financial support of fan projects and the regular revision of information brochures to forms of discrimination. The DFB is therefore intensively committed to a safe environment and the well -being of all stadium visitors.

The debate about security in football remains exciting and needs the help of everyone involved: clubs, police, politics and the fan base itself.
