Scandalous: Cineplex Pfaffenhofen shows film about plastic waste catastrophe!
In Pfaffenhofen on October 26th everything revolves around the explosive issue of plastic waste. The Cineplex is showing the documentary “The North Drift – Plastic in Flows” at 10:30 a.m. This is an event that is organized in close cooperation with the BUND Nature Conservation Pfaffenhofen and the Alliance for Area Protection. After the film, viewers have the opportunity to talk to Patricia Kufer from the Initiative unpackaged and find out more about sustainable alternatives. Tickets are available both online and directly at the Cineplex, so nothing stands in the way of active participation.
But what makes the film so important? Loud Statista Plastic waste is a central problem that affects us all. Around 414 million tons of plastic were produced worldwide in 2023, with a steadily increasing trend. Germany alone produces around 16.8 million tons and exports around 13 million tons of plastic. The EU is faced with the challenge of over 29 million tonnes of plastic waste. On average, around 36 kg of plastic packaging waste is generated per inhabitant in the EU countries every year - in Germany it is even around 39 kg. These are alarming numbers!
An urgent challenge
The problem of plastic pollution should not be underestimated: a plastic bag takes up to 20 years, a PET bottle even around 450 years, to completely decompose in the sea. In the process, it becomes microplastic that ends up in the food chain and harms both marine animals and us humans. This supports the statement of Federal Environment Ministry that unrecycled and incorrectly disposed of plastic waste not only pollutes the environment, but also pollutes our oceans.
A large proportion of plastic waste comes from retail, particularly packaging waste. More and more people are relying on zero-waste concepts and packaging-free shopping. This rethinking is being promoted by many initiatives that are being brought into the spotlight by projects such as the Film Forum in Pfaffenhofen.
Together against plastic
Another aspect are the so-called tethered caps, which are prescribed by EU guidelines. These plastic lids from single-use drink containers have been found to be some of the most common plastic waste found on European beaches. Every year, many marine animals die due to plastic waste that ends up in the water and contributes to the increase in plastic waste.
The event at Cineplex Pfaffenhofen offers an excellent opportunity to not only see the film, but also learn first-hand more about ways to reduce plastic waste. The personal exchange with Patricia Kufer is intended to help viewers implement environmentally friendly alternatives. Be there and do your part to do something good for our planet, because that's exactly where it matters!
