The historic Christmas nativity scene in Pfaffenhofen shines in new splendor!

In the Pfaffenhofen Hospital Church we are currently working hard on the historic nativity scene. This unique nativity scene, which is part of the city's heritage, shines in new splendor after an extensive restoration. With a collection of more than 260 different depictions, including people, animals and miniature objects, it is an exciting cultural gem that illustrates the biblical story from the Annunciation to the Wedding in Canaan donaukurier.de reported.

The nativity scene, which was originally completed in 1719 and is part of the former Franciscan monastery, has been owned by the city of Pfaffenhofen since secularization in 1803. Today it is managed by the Heilig Geist and Gritsch Foundation Foundation. The restoration was led by Ursula Beyer from the Pfaffenhofen a. d. Ilm e. V. took over, supported by Marold Niedersteiner, an experienced restorer and master gilder from Biburg. In many cases, this work is not only time-consuming but also expensive, which is supported by government subsidies and donations.

A valuable cultural heritage

The nativity scene figures are an important part of the cultural heritage that has been preserved in the city of Pfaffenhofen for over 400 years. Particularly noteworthy are the historical pieces of clothing that come from the Baroque period and give the figures their authentic character. The nativity scene is presented during Advent until mid-February with various scenes ranging from the Annunciation to Mary to the birth of Jesus and the flight into Egypt. A total of twelve changing scenes are shown that fascinate the audience.

In order to preserve the character of the nativity scene, damaged props are only replaced with carefully manufactured new parts, and the figures that have already been processed did not stand in the way of completing the sets. The restoration will take several years as the work only takes place in months when there are no crèches, which represents an additional challenge.

A call for support

The crib's restoration work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026, which increases anticipation for the next exhibition. Anyone interested can support the restoration with a donation, simply note it under the keyword “nativity scene renovation” – a small contribution that can make a big difference. “We want this valuable cultural heritage to be preserved for future generations,” emphasizes Ursula Beyer, who is passionate about the project.

The nativity scene in the Pfaffenhofen Hospital Church is not only a piece of history, but also a living expression of the tradition of maintaining Lower Bavarian Christmas traditions. The restoration is proof of how important the preservation of such cultural assets is for the identity of a community.
