A tragic incident took place late on Saturday evening, August 17, 2025, in Manching, Pfaffenhofen district. Two young men, a 23-year-old driver and his 22-year-old passenger, lost their lives at an unguarded railway crossing. According to the South German newspaper The two of them were driving on the connecting road from Manching towards Lindach when they continued driving despite the flashing red warning lights and the acute danger of an approaching train.
The powerful regional train from Ingolstadt was only able to react with difficulty and emergency braking and crashed head-on into the right side of the vehicle. Tragically, the two occupants probably died immediately in the collision. With a tremendous effort, their car was thrown about 25 meters into the embankment, with wreckage scattered over a distance of 100 meters. The train only came to a stop after about 600 meters.
The emergency measures
There were 15 passengers and a train attendant on the train itself, all of whom luckily remained uninjured. However, the train driver, a 50-year-old, suffered severe shock and required immediate medical treatment. The clean-up work at the scene of the accident lasted until the early hours of Sunday morning.
To deal with the situation, the federal police were on site together with the DB emergency manager and emergency technicians. The fire brigades from Manching and Westenhausen supported the rescue and evacuation. The Ingolstadt public prosecutor's office was informed of the incident and an order was made to seize the vehicle.
Consequences for rail traffic
The train's passengers were escorted to the next station in Ernsgaden, where a replacement rail service could be organized. The recovery of the vehicle was completed around 5 a.m. on Sunday morning, so that rail traffic could be reopened after a thorough inspection of the tracks. The estimated material damage amounts to almost 300,000 euros.
