The gripping plot of Lohengrin

But what exactly is this epic romantic opera about? The action takes place in the Kingdom of Brabant and follows the story of Elsa, who is facing divine judgment under the German King Henry. She is accused of murdering her brother Gottfried. The enemy accuser is Friedrich von Telramund, who strives for power himself. In desperation, Elsa calls upon a protective dream figure who appears as a Swan Knight. He defeats Telramund and proves Elsa's innocence, but only wants to marry her if she never asks him his name. The inner conflict and the question of his identity ultimately lead to tragic consequences on his wedding night.

“Lohengrin” is considered the high point of romantic opera and is often seen as an identification figure for Richard Wagner himself. In an environment in which he did not find a home for a long time, the search for belonging and meaning is dramatized in the opera.
