Freyung in a state of emergency: Over 15,000 visitors at Bundeswehr Day!

On June 28, 2025, the picturesque town of Freyung in the Bavarian Forest provided the setting for this year's “Bundeswehr Day”. The annual event opened the gates to the barracks on this day and became a showcase for the Bundeswehr. As the reservist association reports, Freyung was selected as one of only two locations in Bavaria where the Bundeswehr could present its diverse facets. Under the motto “Da Woid ruaft”, up to 15,600 visitors were able to take part in the event and gain an insight into the life and work of the soldiers.

There was already a huge rush in the morning when visitors arrived at 8:30 a.m. through access and bag checks. The officials welcomed the guests at 10:00 a.m. with impressive speeches. Among the speakers were Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Dan Tomunzia, Minister of State Dr. Florian Herrmann as well as District Administrator Sebastian Gruber and Mayor Dr. Olaf Heinrich. This celebrity underscored the importance of the event for the region and the bond between citizens and the Bundeswehr.

Diverse attractions and highlights

The event itself was a real experience for young and old. The offering included dynamic demonstrations ranging from a Leopard 2 main battle tank to military close combat training to self-defense. The highlight of the day was the impressive flyover of three Airbus A400Ms, which symbolically underlined the effectiveness of the Air Force. The visitors were also able to interact with various areas of the Bundeswehr, including the Cyber Command, the Navy and the Medical Service.

There was an extensive family program for the younger guests. A climbing course and face painting ensured that even the youngest children got their money's worth. Another highlight was the tornado cockpit, which served as a selfie zone and aroused great interest. In addition, regional costume clubs and the mountain music corps from Bad Reichenhall offered musical entertainment.

Strong response and new members

The information stand of the reservist association was very busy, and many visitors were curious about the opportunities that volunteer work offers. Five new members were accepted into the Passau district group of the reservist association - a clear sign of the growing interest in the organization and the Bundeswehr.

A traditional pea stew and delicacies from a food truck provided culinary enjoyment, which rounded off the day. At the end of the day there was an impressive number of visitors who demonstrated not only the military skills in Freyung, but also the lived connection with society.

In summary, it can be said that the “Bundeswehr Day” 2025 in Freyung was a complete success not only for the Bundeswehr, but for the entire city. An all-round success, the event offered a platform for mutual appreciation and an insight into the diverse facets of the soldier's profession. For the organizers and the reservists of the Passau district group, it was a big step to further consolidate this lived connection and understanding of the Bundeswehr in everyday life.
