New election campaign in Neu-Ulm: These candidates are fighting for the mayor's position!
It will be hot in the election campaign for the mayoral election in Neu-Ulm, which will take place on March 8, 2026. The incumbent mayor Katrin Albsteiger, who has been well received since taking office in spring 2020, has announced her comeback and will be nominated by the CSU and JU. She reminded the citizens that urban development is a long-term process and that she still wants to achieve a lot for Neu-Ulm. [Augsburger Allgemeine](https://www.augsburger- Allgemeine.de/neu-ulm/ob-wahl-2026-diese-kanalen-tritt-in-neu-ulm-an-112945225) reports that the official nomination is planned for October 16, 2025.
Katrin Albsteiger, mother of two daughters and living in Burlafingen, is entering the ring again after winning the 2020 local elections with 52.3 percent of the vote in the first round. She had to defeat five opposing candidates. Their central concerns include expanding school care, strengthening the infrastructure and reducing bureaucracy. It relies on the “substance preservation” of the city and highlights its successes, such as the construction of new daycare centers and schools or the renovation of traffic axes. The challenges in Neu-Ulm, whose population is 63,641 (as of December 31, 2024), are obvious in terms of infrastructure and city finances. Ulm-News
The challengers
But Albsteiger will not run alone in the race for mayor. Another seven candidates have also agreed to present their visions and concepts for the city. Among them is Joachim Kögel from the SPD, a 63-year-old entrepreneur from Ludwigsfeld who attaches great importance to being close to the citizens and wants to put the concerns of the people of Neu-Ulm at the center of his work.
Another candidate is Michael Mehren from the Greens. The 34-year-old systems engineer makes his living in Neu-Ulm and wants to score points with his agenda for sustainable urban planning, affordable housing and social cohesion. Kati Ernst from Die Linke, a 45-year-old engineer, has set herself the goal of fighting against the right and promoting affordable housing. The politics of Franz Schmid, the 25-year-old Bavarian state parliament member for the AfD, who relies on understandable politics and citizen-centeredness and is a member of the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution, are completely different.
A colorful mix for Neu-Ulm
The electorate can therefore look forward to a colorful bouquet of ideas and opinions. Roland Prießnitz from FWG, a 64-year-old tax consultant who ran in 2020 and finished with 9.6 percent of the vote, has digitalization and a new mobility strategy on his agenda. Tanja Fendt, the chairwoman of Pro Neu-Ulm, is also striving for courageous decisions for a future-oriented urban policy.
The upcoming elections are not only crucial for the mayor, but also for the city's entire democratic committees. In many independent cities, such as Neu-Ulm, not only the elections of mayors, but also those of city council members are on the agenda. Thanks to these local elections, the course for the future of the city is being set. DSTGB
The election campaign has begun, and the New Umers can continue to be excited to see which candidate they will place their trust in.
